Snow falling in Spring Mountains

Updated Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009 | 12:39 p.m.

Shortly after noon today snow began falling in the Spring Mountains, west of the Las Vegas Valley, the National Weather Service says.

The cold front sweeping through Southern Nevada today lowered temperatures into the 30s in the mountains, the weather service says. Overnight at the Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort another three inches of snow fell by 7 a.m. The base is now 58 inches, the resort reports.

Although no heavy rain is expected in Las Vegas today, a stray shower or thunderstorm is possible this afternoon, the weather service says.

Light rain fell in the Las Vegas Valley early this morning as the fourth storm system in a week drifted into Southern Nevada overnight.

The National Weather Service says three or four more storm systems forming in the Gulf of Alaska and dropping down through Southern California can be expected throughout the weekend and into next week.

The high for Wednesday reached 53 degrees, about nine degrees colder than normal for this time of year, when daytime highs average 62 degrees, the weather service says.

The high today and for Friday is expected to stay in the high 40s to lower 50s as rain showers brush the area. Not much rain is expected in Las Vegas today, although a brief thunderstorm might develop this afternoon.

Showers will come and go Friday and Saturday and then another system will arrive late Saturday, developing Sunday and lingering through Monday.

Yet another storm may arrive late Tuesday and linger into Wednesday, with no end in sight for unsettled, blustery weather, the weather service says.
