Letter to the editor:

First-time buyers already benefiting

I am writing to protest a credit for first-time homebuyers in the proposed stimulus package that Congress is considering. Such a credit may sound good on paper, but maybe there should be a dialogue about the negatives of such a credit.

I do not understand why the rest of us should have to subsidize those who are benefiting from reduced prices and low rates. Now we would have to foot the bill for these people’s hot tubs and home improvements?

So many are upside down on their mortgages. So many are out of work. Could this money not be better spent? Why not reduce taxes for all? Why has Congress chosen such arbitrary dates for eligibility of this credit?

I fear such a credit and its exclusion of so many who are more deserving would only encourage more people to walk out on their mortgages. Therefore, I encourage everyone who feels the same way to contact Sens. John Ensign and Harry Reid, and Reps. Dina Titus, Shelley Berkley and Dean Heller.
