FLASHPOINT:

Nevada leaders in thick of stimulus package

Whatever the final stimulus package looks like, it will not be without a sizable Nevada imprint. Three state officials played prominent roles in defining the debate. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid obviously helped lead the negotiations in the Club of 100. Sen. John Ensign played a prominent role on the GOP side as a frequent TV spokesman and as a promoter of a housing component (even though his idea failed). And, of course, Mayor Oscar Goodman helped the state become a symbol of spending excess — so much so that Oklahoma’s Tom Coburn proposed an amendment that had the Las Vegas project’s name on it. It may not stimulate the economy right away, but the bill sure stimulated Nevada’s political influence.
