Estimated stimulus benefits for Nevadans

White House officials released updated estimates Wednesday of the benefits of President Barack Obama’s economic stimulus plan, now pending in the Senate.

The package is expected to affect Nevada in the following ways:

36,300

Jobs created or saved over the next two years. More than 90 percent of the jobs would be in the private sector.

$1,000

Tax cut provided for as many as 960,000 workers.

32,000

Families eligible for a new American Opportunity Tax Credit to make college affordable. Families could receive a $2,500, partially refundable tax credit for four years of college.

$100

Additional amount, per month, in unemployment insurance benefits for 195,000 workers who have lost their jobs during the recession, in addition to the extension of unemployment benefits to 40,000 more laid-off workers.

60

Minimum number of Nevada schools that would receive money for modernization.

The White House said Nevadans would also see an undetermined share of the following nationwide benefits:

• The largest increase in investment in our nation’s roads, bridges and mass transit systems since the creation of the national highway system in the 1950s.

• A doubling of renewable energy generating capacity over three years, creating enough renewable energy to power 6 million American homes.

• Computerizing every American’s health record within five years, reducing medical errors and saving billions of dollars in health care costs.
