Letter to the editor:

SAGE Academy a model for school for gifted students

Monday, Dec. 21, 2009 | 2 a.m.

Regarding the Las Vegas Sun’s Wednesday story, “Jump-starting a proposed academy for the county’s top students”:

Congratulations to the Clark County School District for receiving the grant to develop year-round classes for gifted students. Increased attention to our best and brightest students is very much needed in the Las Vegas Valley.

What should also be mentioned is that a potential model exists between the Clark County School District and UNLV: The Summer Advanced Gifted Education (SAGE) Academy at UNLV’s Honors College has offered summer classes for Clark County gifted students since 2005. Both college and high school credit is offered, classes are taught by our faculty, and more than 300 students have attended.

The writer is director of UNLV Honors College’s SAGE Academy.
