Man arrested in shooting death of cousin

Monday, Dec. 21, 2009 | 5:39 p.m.

Sandy Valley death

A Sandy Valley man was arrested Sunday for shooting and killing his cousin outside his home.

Kenny Ray Turner, 59, 655 Cherokee Street, is being held on a murder charge in connection with the death of his cousin, who had been living with him for the past month, according to Las Vegas Metro police said.

Turner told police that his cousin, Byron Richards, had gone to a nearby bar earlier in the evening, around 5 p.m. Sunday. When Richards returned around midnight, Turner told his cousin he couldn’t stay with him anymore, police said.

Turner told police that Richards then became upset, got into his car, and sped away, driving to the end of the street, then returning.

When Richards came back, Turner said he went outside with a .40 caliber handgun in his left hand.

Turner told police his cousin came through the gate, which was held together with rope, and began yelling and waving his arms. Turner told police that Richards pushed him on his right shoulder and the gun went off.

Richards allegedly fell to the ground, and began yelling “you shot me.” Turner then called police at 12:05 a.m., according to an arrest report.

Paramedics arrived and transported Richards to UMC. He died as a result of his injuries, police said.

Turner is being held on charges of murder with a deadly weapon and being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm.
