State awards $886,055 contract for Census marketing

Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2009 | 6:01 p.m.

CARSON CITY – A Minnesota firm is being given a $886,055 state contract to do marketing and advertising to make sure all Nevada residents are counted in the 2010 census.

Secretary of State Ross Miller has awarded the contract to Weber Shandwick of Minneapolis. There were 10 bidders for the job, including R&R Partners, who won the job in the 2000 census.

Nevada had the 19th best count of any state in 2000. And state officials estimate Nevada loses $917 in federal funds every year for every person who isn't counted.

The Nevada Legislature allocated $960,000 to conduct a campaign to make Nevadans aware of the census.

The contract must be approved at a special meeting of the state Board of Examiners on Friday.

Tim Ryan, the executive of Weber Shandwick, who is handling the contract, refused to talk about the strategies that will be used until the state board approves it.
