Traffic crash

A 21-year-old man was critically injured this morning after his car went through a red traffic signal and struck a pickup truck in a west Las Vegas Valley intersection.

Metro Police responded at 7:48 a.m. to the crash at the intersection of West Sahara Avenue and Grand Canyon Drive. Police said a 1990 Acura was westbound on Sahara and failed to stop for a red light.

The Acura collided with the left-front of a 2002 Chevrolet pickup truck that was southbound on Grand Canyon traveling through the intersection on a green light, police said.

The Acura then struck a light pole, causing it to fall over. The driver, Rudi Cortez-Hernandez, of Las Vegas, was extracted from the vehicle by Las Vegas Fire & Rescue and taken to University Medical Center's trauma unit with critical injuries, police said.

The driver of the pickup truck, Scott Kelleher, 40, of Las Vegas, suffered minor injuries, police said.
