LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Christmas reunion a timely blessing

Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009 | 2:03 a.m.

I’ve had many special holiday memories, especially those of my childhood. In my adult years there haven’t been a lot of Christmases that have stood out in my mind, but I always remember the true meaning of Christmas.

On Dec. 18 I’ll be getting a visit from a friend who goes back in time. This Christmas will be a special one, which will bring back those treasured years of childhood, when Molly comes to town.

I haven’t seen Molly in 45 years, and we’ve only been in contact recently by phone or e-mail. She was my very first girlfriend in eighth grade. I know that because I gave her my little blue letterman sweater. I wasn’t sure she would remember, but she did.

I didn’t know where she was living and she didn’t know where I was. As it turns out, she has a son living in Las Vegas and has been visiting him the past few years. This year she is coming to visit her son, along with her daughter and sister, and plans to stay several more days in order for us to catch up on the years gone by.

I find myself taking a giant step back and seeing two kids who met in school so many years ago, seeing what looked like the age of innocence. We had no idea at the time what we’d be going through in our lives — the joys, sorrows and struggles.

Many of us in Las Vegas and across the country have been going through some tough times and struggling the past year or more. It may sound cliche, but it rings true: If you have your health, your family, and your friends, count those blessings. If you know someone lacking any of these blessings, be a friend and say a prayer for them. My blessing count was already high — when I found out that my friend Molly, was coming to visit, it overflowed.
