LETTER TO THE EDITOR:
Adults’ rudeness spoils children’s program at school
Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009 | 2:02 a.m.
I recently attended a Christmas program at a local public school and was shocked and appalled at the behavior of some of the adults in attendance.
When some of the children sang solos, I heard some parents snickering. During the pieces played by the string orchestra, parents talked loudly among themselves ... and some even moaned and groaned whenever they played.
These children work hard and deserve the respect of everyone around them to sit quietly and listen. When they would play a piece, I actually heard one woman exclaim, “Oh, no, not another one” and several times she asked if they were done yet. I did notice, however, that she was quiet and attentive when it was her child’s turn to sing.
I come from a small town in Ohio that didn’t have the funding to afford programs like these, and these parents should be proud these kids have the opportunity to participate in this.
Lastly, while the young man sang the national anthem, I couldn’t help notice a lot of people sat and refused to stand or remove their hats. I have never seen such rude behavior in my life, and they all should be ashamed of themselves.

Ditto on mwh. Imagine what it's like to teach the children of these jerks. Imagine what parent conferences with them are like. They treat teachers the same way. Imagine their kids' classroom behavior. But it's our fault that kids are failing tests?
It's well past time for the government to stop treating the schools as social welfare agencies with teachers who are supposed to behave as surrogates to counter the damage being done to kids and our society by miserable parents - not to mention forcing us to hold our tongues and put up with these people's absurd demands and obnoxious behavior.
It's time to start requiring some minimum behavior standards in exchange for an education. The schools are free-for-all zones. Why? You behave like that in a concert hall and you'll be escorted out. But we put up with anything and everything in our schools. That's a major reason our society is crumbling. Along with the good they do, our schools are doing a lot of damage. Education is expensive; our money shouldn't be squandered on students who have no intention of learning.
If parents can't behave at a school performance, KICK THEM OUT. But the schools won't confront these social thugs. They run amok in the public education system. Unless you're a teacher, you wouldn't believe some of the obnoxious, nasty, abusive behaviors I've had to put up with in parent "conferences" where the parent should have been shown to the door and told to come back when they can behave in a civil manner, or not come back at all. And then these people breed and send their offspring to teachers to be raised, but complain loudly when teachers try to do something about their kids' terrible behavior. This is the society we're growing, and the schools are a big part of why.
Most parents in this day and age are still just kids themselfs. >>>>> SAD BUT TRUE!
I bet they were a bunch of Palin haters working themselves up into a froth about her new book that is number one...
Rude behavior at a public performance in public schools? Really, what the writer Rodney Owens needs to do is to attend a local high school graduation ceremony to see the ultimate in rude, rauchous, boisterous, out of control behavior and the blatant lack of respect for a dignified, time honored ceremony.
Local High School, and sadly enough, university graduation ceremonies have been degraded to the level of what one would expect at an athletic contest...shouting, cheering, booing, cat calls, sheer scream of whistles, bull horns, air horns, whistles...and on an on... Dignity and the solemnity of the ceremony has been lost on the crude, ignorant, uneducated moronic public populating our community. Las Vegas has never been none for much CULTURE and CLASS and unfortunately these activities reinforce that image....
Unfortunately, these behviors are becoming a universal standard throughout this country. It is only in a few high quality national known private schools where graduation is a time honored and dignified ceremony ...
I agree with POWERPLAY but LarryVegas is off topic and childish.
Boorish behavior in public knows no politics but exists across the spectrum from some candidate Obama rallys to the teabaggers and conservatives behavior at town halls shouting down people in wheelchairs for christ sake! A little politeness in public shows class.
On message boards anonymity also encourages such behavior and on occasion I have, out of frustration with the anti science bent of the two above mentioned posters, also exhibited poor behavior. In my defense it is an ongoing effort to debunk the rights clear ideological bent to dismiss science in favor of their various delusions, such as capitalism somehow solving the very problems it has helped to create ala working conditions for average people, environmental conditions where we all live, and other thoughtless positions.
Finally, I have to remember that most people in Las Vegas are very selfish and these boards reflect that fact very well.
Now mschaffer... Enough of your left wing rhetoric this morning. Maybe you have not been paying attention when the left wing radicals were demonizing Bush, Cheney, Palin, Ensign and every other conservative that has ever stepped foot on this earth.
This discussion forum is a good example how rude people can get. Mostly it's the left wing radicals who name call and demonize those with a different political opinion then there own.
Now, I have noticed through the years that parents attending public and school activities are lacking in social skills and believe that they can behave in any way that they like. Of course, through the years, our education system has taught "Individualism." Be yourself, anytime anyplace. It's your first amendment right to say what you want to say, when you want to say it and where you want to say it.
Sometimes we reap what we sow...
"Lastly, while the young man sang the national anthem, I couldn't help notice a lot of people sat and refused to stand or remove their hats. I have never seen such rude behavior in my life, and they all should be ashamed of themselves."
Owens -- right, we should all live like you and your Mayberry, Ohio, idyllic standards.
I don't stand, etc., for the national anthem, either. This country no longer deserves that respect.
I don't agree with KillerB's view of the U.S.
But he and others definitely has the right to remain seated during the national anthem. I would only ask that they would remain silent during the anthem. Everyone that I have ever observed who have remained seated were polite.
No problem here...
Killer8
Shame on you. Do you have your brats in the school system. If so, please take them out and home school them. You are the problem.
And Larry,
Please Shut-up about Palin already. We had plenty of your nonsense yesterday.
KillerB
It's time for you to find a killerb fast way out of the USA.
Hey Brian..
I suppose you are tired of my nonsense but not ksand99 and friends... Shame on you...
Even if you don't like KillerB's response, he has every right to make it and to remained seated during the anthem.
ChillerD: you will stand in my presence or you're keister and teeth will be moping up the floor.
meant your not you're. But what does it really matter. At least I didn't open with, "Let me be clear..."
LarryVegas -- thanx for your post. Both our views are a valid part of our right to Free Expression. When our government at least starts its respecting Constitutional limits, I'll reconsider. Otherwise don't count on me joining the same kind of lockstepping herd we still call Nazis.
Brian, cla -- your posts translate respectively to "moooooo" and "baaaahaaaa." Try something new -- thinking for yourselves.
mikegino -- if you're referring to me reconsider. You haven't seen me, judged my size or capabilities for defending myself -- I could very well be an ex-Vietnam War SEAL. Lucky for you, you're not ever likely to. So your threat is as empty as your head and your posts.
"The Fuhrer is always right." -- Joachim von Ribbentrop, the 1939 Konigsberg address
Chiller: I deal in lead, eat SEALs for breakfast, don't care about size, and certainly don't need luck when it comes to dealing with fools who fail to show proper respect.
Alright children, enough with the playground taunts as it shows you are more like the rude parent than the polite adult.
Blessed be the peacemakers.
Depends on the caliber of the peacemaker...
Larry: I made a classic mistake years ago when the Marine Corps adopted the Beretta M9A1. I got rid of my 1911's and went 9 mil to the max (Browning, HK, CZ, etc). Big mistake.
Guys, I would so much rather be shooting!
Yes Mike, We used to carry 9mm with +P+ heavy loads. When the Border Patrol went to semi-auto around 1994 they adopted the Beretta 96D in .40 caliber. The round was a lot better then the pistol and shortly after some of us went to the .40 caliber Sig Sauer P229. A fine piece of work...
Larry, I love the smell of cordite in the morning...afternoon...evening.
The freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution give KillerB every right to stay seated.
If you don't respect the Constitution, leave. Yes, basic human dignity and decorum should be afforded these children at their holiday presentations.
Meanwhile, can the gun guys take their foreplay to private messages? I'm feeling ill.
Children have their own life, love them, give them joy and respect. But don't stuck with your dreams and unwillingness to share theirs joy.
It goes to show you that todays parents were taught by their radical 60's parents and were taught by our liberal teacher friends. Seems nothing changed with public education or parents.
Kevin: well, I never...You have a prudish streak in you. I never would have guessed it.
Big moment, big show. Stage is set by proud moment.
Ole mike! mschaffer and kilterb and ksandy; eat them burritos.
Ah Mike... And the taste of cordite residue in you mouth after a firefight is glorious.
I bet KillerB would have the consideration to remain silent during the anthem. Kevin/Ksand99 would not have that consideration and would probably have to be slapped down to keep him silent.
what do you expect? it's vegas, one of the most low class and least educated places in the country. it's practically third-world here. and to all you tough guys on here...hilarious.
The topic is "rudeness" so we all are still on topic...
The environemnt of parental rudeness is exactly the kind of environment teachers encounter with students every day in the CCSD. Teachers are expected to go into overcrowded classrooms and correct disruptive behavior of out of control students while instilling in them a love of learning. The teacher must observe and report any visible signs of abuse, and attempt to raise student self esteem and personal pride.
Teachers serve as pseudo nurse practitioners checking children for head lice, vision problems, personal hygiene and cleanliness , signs of malnutrition as well as documenting and reporting antisocial behavior.
Among the duties of the teacher are those that require observing clothing attire and dress habits, censoring inappropriate messages on T-shirts, advising the administration of any clothing items or markings associated with gang affiliations. Teachers regularly have to check backpacks for weapons or illicit drugs; monitoring student behavior and activities in the cafeteria, hallways between classes, on the school grounds and supervise on and off loading of bus loads of students.
Teachers are mandated to provide all students with an equal education regardless of special needs, handicaps and other diverse differences. Parents must be notified continuously in English, Spanish or other languages about individual student progress. Communications may be by letter, telephone, newsletter, e-mail, progress report and a report card.
Student and parental concerns about homework, special projects, exams and other such activities are top priority and must be accommodated on an individual basis.
Teachers become parents in absentia teaching good citizenship, honesty, ethical behavior, sportsmanship, fair play and need and importance for a quality education.
Teachers do all of this often for salaries that qualify for food stamps; all of this with a lack of books, paper, supplies while maintaining a professional attitude, a big smile and loving the job of teaching.
The people are most likely related to many of the commenters here who can't seem to stay on topic and think discussion involves insulting anyone who doesn't agree with them.
The behavior the letter writer describes has been around a long time. I remember going to my daughter's dance recitals over 20 years ago and being astounded by the rudeness of people who only pay attention during their own child's performance.
Burrito: I eat one of your namesakes almost every morning. Because my wife refuses, at knifepoint, to make homemade tortillas we've found that packaged uncooked tortillas in Costco are the best alternative to homemade. These are soooo much better than the packaged crap in the grocery stores and they also make great quesadillas. I DON'T CARE IF I'M OFF POINT, IT'S SATURDAY!
Shame on the behavior of these low life parents that can't sit through a simple school function. Most of the children on stage are probably nervous as it is and to have these jackasses with no class acting like they would rather be home watching television sucks. The children on stage can hear most of the audience the same as they do the people next to them. As far as the lame a$$es that refuse to stand for the national anthem, There's no excuse, PERIOD!! Way to go you lazy and shameful examples of the american spirit.
Adults who eat burritos do not spoil children's program at school. There... Right on point.
I get my tortillas at Costco also. Pretty good and priced great. I am not writing a book so I have to cut corners here and there. I also buy my Bud Light at Costco, unless they have a sale on them at Smiths.
Your lucky, Mike. My wife has to hold me at knife point to get me to eat her cooking.
When I eat burritos, I am a good boy at school programs and not rude. On Point...
mschaffer, ksand99 -- I'm not the one who started with the threats. If it matters to you look at the posts. mikegino got personal and he's on my totally irrelevant list.
LarryVegas -- you called it right.
"As far as the lame a$$es that refuse to stand for the national anthem, There's no excuse, PERIOD!! Way to go you lazy and shameful examples of the american spirit."
spock -- I see the basic concept of freedom continues to elude you. Can you say "Tory"?
Chiller: go to the public library and read some excerpts about what some before you have done to defend the freedom you enjoy tonight.
killerb, Are you saying it's too much ask to get off your a$$ to show a little respect to this country? Buy the way, The mere fact that I elude to the shameless act of improper behavior seem's to enlighten your distain for common decency. Your comments are TIRED!
spock -- at least I can spell.
killerb, keep congratulating yourself! You got me, I should have read it first. That being said, Any decent person would show respect to the children and this country by standing and shutting up! By the way, Here is the "to" I missed. Shove off mate!
Mike, Larry what tortillas do you guys buy at costco.
wheres sergio the prophet when you need him! what a bunch of slugs! no wonder vegas is in the crapper with these low lifes. it helps to explain the main point of the article that adults have no respect at school functions and its ALWAYS about their little ritalin addled brat. it also explains that americans do not pay our teachers enough to put up with those people that dont care.
Burrito: I don't know the name off-hand but they're uncooked and kept in the refridgerated area. They come in two separate package of 40. The price is really great in comparison to Walmart, which is the only other place where we've seen them for sale. Buen Provecho!
this is las vegas what do u expect. people here are rude, adults do not say excuse me and will bump u passing u in a store. People will cuss at you, flip u off while driving, no one has a high school diploma so why would they respect school in any way.
as far as the national anthem, I grew up with a friend whose family are Jehovah's Witnesses, they do not stand for the anthem. I can't tell u how many times I had to stick up for my friend in school when rude adults would yell at her for not standing. Once I would state she was a JW then the rude adults would walk away. How many stares, shouts, to a child (we were in 8th grade).
LV is the most rude, ignorant , uneducated no class, no manner place I have ever lived in and I lived all over and other countries. Take a stand be proud LV you're ignorant and you celebrate it.
Adults are the rudest friggin animals that slither around this planet. Children are yet to be contaminated little personalities which if taught and raised properly can be respectful of nature, fellow people, and honorable. The Native peoples knew this and lived it centuries ago, and still do today...
