Gatorade named Del Sol's Dezerick Reed the 2009 Nevada Football Player of the Year on Thursday.
Reed has led Del Sol (12-1) with 1,885 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns. He also plays linebacker and has recorded 70 tackles and 12.5 sacks.
“I’m real excited,” Reed said. “I didn’t want to think about it too much, but it was really exciting. I wasn’t expecting it at all.”
Reed said he heard the news this morning when Del Sol coach Preston Goroff pulled him aside at school.
It caught Reed off-guard.
“I heard I was nominated, but I didn’t think I had a chance at all,” Reed said. “I didn’t think I’d win because there are great players in Las Vegas and Nevada.”
Although Reed is honored to win the award, he remains more excited for Saturday’s state championship game against Bishop Gorman.
Despite severely spraining his ankle in last week’s game against Basic, Reed will play against Gorman. Between the state championship appearance and player of the year award, it’s been a special season for Reed.
“This year has been very amazing,” Reed said. “No one would ever expect us to be where we’re at right now and I didn’t even know about Gatorade Player of the Year.”
