Passenger counts at McCarran International Airport fell again in July for the 17th straight month as the Las Vegas economy continues to falter, according to numbers released today.
In July, 3,557,509 passengers used McCarran, compared to 3,923,472 in the same month last year, the Clark County Aviation Department reported. The drop in passengers was 9.3 percent for July compared to the previous July.
Overall, the number of arriving and departing passengers has fallen 11.5 percent year to date: 23,783,015 this year, compared to 26,862,619 in 2008.
Southwest Airlines, McCarran's busiest carrier, showed a fraction of an increase in July -- 0.8 percent or 1,405,593 passengers compared to 1,393,946 in 2008 -- but the year-to-date rate shows a 4.2 percent decline.
Delta Air Lines showed a 1.3 percent improvement, 198,526 passengers this year in July compared to 195,917 in 2008. Overall, Delta's passenger count has declined by 6.5 percent year to date.
American Airlines, based in Fort Worth, Texas, showed a boost in passengers from 184,714 last July to 200,322 this year.
US Airways, the No. 2 operator at McCarran, declined 41 percent in July -- 414,020 this year compared to 701,946 last year.

Seventeen months and counting! How many more months before we see some kind of recovery?
When Obama leaves office and we change the direction of our country.
recovery is coming in numbers, late last year the roof fell off the increase and was in double digit slumps, we might actually have an increase in Nov-Dec...
thanks, liberals.
Hope and Change.
Interestingly, despite the drops there are still a LOT of people going through McCarren. The average tourist would probably still feel that Vegas was vibrant. The problem for the Vegas economy is that everyone, from the mega-corporations down to the average joe living from paycheck to paycheck, is over-leveraged. The bills won't get paid until Vegas is humming at 99.9% capacity again.
Our great country was headed in the wrong direction under Bush. It takes awhile to change course. I own a small business and have FINALLY started to see things improve over the last month. I've voted for Reps and Dems in the past. The Reps had their chance and failed. If the stimulus doesn't work, the Dems will get thrown out too. That is the greatest thing about our democracy. We get the chance to fix the problem every 4 years.
Wow. AA almost carried as many passengers as WN. Something must be wrong. AA has a fraction of flights as WN.
Is it really the liberals' doing, or are more people wising up that there are more rewarding things in life than gambling, $10 drinks, over-priced dinners, and porn shoved in your face?
I don't see this news as another reason to beat the hate-drum, but a wake up call for Las Vegas to diversify its industries. The days of excess may be over for awhile.
6 per cent drop in GDP in 4th qtr 2008 and another 6 per cent in the first qtr 6 per cent, we were at the precipice of a depression. But through the efforts of the government and the Fed this disaster was averted. Obama inherited an economic mess that will takes some time to climb out of. Why do the Repubs expect an immediate turnaround on a problem that took years of easy credit to create?
Lets face it...Las Vegas...its history and the way the town was built right up to the peak of the boom...is a complete anti-thesis to Obama's Marxist leanings and his government of socialism.
And I'll still take Vegas any day...!
Didn't Obama say the recession was over????
you saw what happened when bush/cheney were running the nation; what moron would want to go back to that outfit?
Good. Maybe the town will get back to the days when it was alot more fun. OpenRange you make some good points in your statements. Bigger is not always better.
People are not flying unless it's necessary!! How many of you have flown in the past 17 months for pleasure?
Wow. A lot of people think Obama must have God-like powers when it comes to the economy. I know you all love him, but you need to be realistic and accept the fact that a decade of mismanagement can't be undone just like that, even if Obama is amazing! Its going to still be a while. Yes the recession is beginning to end but its going to be perhaps more months before the economy goes from full recession to slow recovery.
I am looking at you DessertSun, stevem, nieman1 and SgtRock. I know you love Obama and think he is capable of working miracles, but give him some time! You just expect him to undo so many years of damage from conservative leadership in a few months? Aren't we being a little worship prone? Tone the Obama love down a notch and be a bit realistic!
Krases - Obama PROMISED MIRACLES! Not just on the economy, autos & infrastructure, but for Afghanistan, Iraq, Korea, world peace in general as well as changing the weather.
