Passenger counts at McCarran International Airport fell again in July for the 17th straight month as the Las Vegas economy continues to falter, according to numbers released today.

In July, 3,557,509 passengers used McCarran, compared to 3,923,472 in the same month last year, the Clark County Aviation Department reported. The drop in passengers was 9.3 percent for July compared to the previous July.

Overall, the number of arriving and departing passengers has fallen 11.5 percent year to date: 23,783,015 this year, compared to 26,862,619 in 2008.

Southwest Airlines, McCarran's busiest carrier, showed a fraction of an increase in July -- 0.8 percent or 1,405,593 passengers compared to 1,393,946 in 2008 -- but the year-to-date rate shows a 4.2 percent decline.

Delta Air Lines showed a 1.3 percent improvement, 198,526 passengers this year in July compared to 195,917 in 2008. Overall, Delta's passenger count has declined by 6.5 percent year to date.

American Airlines, based in Fort Worth, Texas, showed a boost in passengers from 184,714 last July to 200,322 this year.

US Airways, the No. 2 operator at McCarran, declined 41 percent in July -- 414,020 this year compared to 701,946 last year.
