SNAPSHOT:
The ‘density’ of Las Vegas area crime
Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009 | 2 a.m.
The map below shows the “density” of reported burglaries, robberies, larcenies and motor vehicle thefts from June 1 to July 30 within Metro Police's jurisdiction. These crimes represent about 20 percent of all crimes reported to Metro in that period. The color coding is based on the proximity and frequency of reported crimes.

a little more info instead of fewer and more would be better..lol
is that like fewer = 100 crimes per 1000 people or 10,000 crimes per 1 person... it makes no real sense to publish this without figures..
maybe, just maybe....if Metro officers actually spent time patrolling area's rather than sitting in their car/motorcycle with a radar gun to generate ticket revenue....maybe we would have fewer burglaries, and thus the need for fewer cops????
the ends justifies the means in this case....and even generate MORE $$$ for our corrupt Police Department.
wow, looks like alot of crime on the strip.
dodgerchuck
There has always been a lot of crime on the Strip; it's just never "advertised". Even petty thieves or people who have never stolen a thing in their lives before can find easy marks in all the Strip hotels. People let their guard down. They get drunk. They walk places where they shouldn't be (ie Flamingo or Trop west of 15 at 2:00am), ladies leave their purses where ANYONE can walk off with them, and that includes bars, restaurants or at slot machines; the hookers that rob their "johns"; the young girls partying and the date rape drugs (this has become a serious problem; maybe it has slowed down a bit because of less tourism, but this is an ongoing thing Metro is dealing with all the time - you just never hear about it). The list goes on and on. Nothing new.
that little pocket right there around south rainbow / jones and 215 / warm springs is sad.
that WAS, just 3 years ago a REALLY nice part of town.
it was all new, close to the strip, with affordable homes.
now, all those homes are in foreclosure and landlords are doing the "no credit or background background check" and sure enough...crime is creeping up.
i've said it a thousand times. the cops need to drive through EVERY residential neighborhood in their "zone" when they are on patrol AT LEAST ONCE A DAY!
Ok, so turn some of the traffic stuff over to meter maids and also if they ticketed all the folks who don't have front license plates they could raise say 10 million or more! I would like to see the stats behind these graphic representations!
It's a useless chart. Does it mean number of crimes, or number of crimes per 1,000 residents? Population density (away from the strip) is a significant information factor.
And of course the strip is the highest density...
NO CRIMES AT THE AIRPORT BECAUSE IT'S A GUN-FREE ZONE!

This is what cops do in just about every big city! The good old fashioned beat cop, but he doesn't walk, he drives! Every shift knows the goings on of the neighborhood. But here, they would have to hire more police and I doubt that they have the money to do it. Sad.
also if they ticketed all the folks who don't have front license plates

THe way some cars are made, it can't be done.
Front license plates - Per Nevada law, only required if the manufacturer provides a mechanism of mounting the plate. Otherwise, not required. (I didn't feel like drilling holes in the front of my cars, so no front plate.)
Has there ever been an actual stat of how many vehicles get stolen at hotels along the strip? Or is this also kept under wraps to keep the tourists driving in from surrounding areas?
publicbj: I think it's number of serious property crimes per unit area, for example crimes per square mile.
I think the article is meant to highlight the database capabilities of Metro. They could generate any number of maps and reports, and also spot trends, like stevem notes.
The City of Henderson website gives actual numbers of crimes by zip code, school or park, etc. Las Vegas should do the same. Some areas of Henderson have crime rates equal to South Central L.A. while other areas are almost crime free.
Yeah, imagine if Vegas was a gun free zone instead of a gun show and crime zone.
Yes, because if Vegas was a gun-free zone then all the crime and bad guys would just go away......
Amen brother!!
Never seen a place where the cops are busier looking for vehicle violations then doing intense area patrols. I see and hear this on a daily basis all over the valley. The cops can't be everywhere but, having 2 cars pulled over in a 4 block stretch and a armed robbery go down a few blocks away and the suspect get away, well I guess they are just doing what is needed, making up for the lost tax money.
stevem, there is a lot of retail 215/rainbow. prob retail theft, car breakins. and i dont see much around jones/215 to worry about
I like the comment no crime at airport, because it is a gun free zone. Does that mean there is no crime there or is it because oh, lets say it is handled on a federal level, so it would not be reported to local police. If the argument is to ban guns, just remember drugs are illegal so nobody can get them huh. HMMM did not work so well to outlaw drugs now did it, and it wont work to outlaw guns. But break into my house and I will show you a criminal who wont commit another crime.
kenthinks hit it right on the head. Another name for a "gun free zone" is "target rich environment" or ""help yourself to my property" because nobody here has the means to do anything about it
Interesting diagram. There should be a running account month after month for the whole year. Then the police would know where to put more emphasis.
The casinos are the biggest crooks.
flash...casinos only take what you GIVE to them.
as for airport crime, there is plenty of criminal activity at that airport. its not reported because a seperate airport unit is on site policing the place and does not account for calls for service. lets of theft mostly at the port and most of the big crimes are handled feds.
kenthinks is such a bad_ss!! NOT!!!
If I was to go by this map, it's telling me North Vegas isn't so bad. I have only been told the opposite by real estate agents I've spoke to. Houses for sale(rather foreclosure) in NLV 89031, 89081 are listed way cheaper than in other areas. Im not getting it, and trying to convince my spouse to move elsewhere.
FROMNYC2LV: It doesn't show anything about North Las Vegas since that is under the jurisdiction of the North Las Vegas Police Department, not the Metro Police.
I wonder how this compares to my neighborhood in NY. We had the option of going to Reno instead of Vegas, but I've heard that's worse. Where can I get a true picture of where its best to live? Or do I have to buy a shotgun, put up steel gates and bars on the windows no matter where I live in Vegas?
gun free zones?if such a law was passed,i can just picture the long lines of gangs and other criminals lineing up to turn there gun in to the police.you live in a fantasy world.
