NLV police union agrees to forgo cost of living increase

The city of North Las Vegas and the North Las Vegas Police Officers Association have reached a tentative agreement that could put millions of dollars into the city’s coffers.

The Police Officers Association has agreed to forgo a 4 percent cost of living increase and defer the increase to future years when economic conditions improve. They also agreed to defer their clothing allowance for six months and to defer holiday and sick leave sell-back for the upcoming fiscal year.

Concessions also included a buyout package that would offer a week’s salary for each year employed with the city, said Michael Yarter, vice president of the North Las Vegas Police Officers Association Local 41.

The City Council must approve the agreement. The changes would save the city about $4.4 million.

“We are pleased that POA-represented employees agreed to partner with the city during these difficult financial times,” City Manager Gregory E. Rose said in a statement. “This tentative agreement enables the city to continuing to provide the highest quality services to our community while remaining fiscally responsible.”

Roughly 90 percent of the 475-member union approved the deal, Yarter said.

“They were willing to do their part and our guys stepped up to the plate and wanted to help out,” he said.

The deal is similar to one the International Association of Firefighters Local 1607 agreed to earlier this month. The city’s firefighter union agreed to forgo a 3.5 percent cost-of-living increase this year and defer part of that increase to a time when the economy improves. The deal also cuts the firefighter uniform allowances in half and defers for one year a plan in which employees can sell back to the city a portion of their holiday and sick leave.

The City is still in discussions with the Teamsters Local 14 union.
