Bicyclist, 12, injured after driver is blinded by sun

Injury crash

A 12-year-old Las Vegas girl riding a bicycle was critically injured Monday when a driver who told police the sun was in her eyes struck the child with her Ford Explorer, Metro Police said.

At about 6:35 p.m., a 2002 Ford Explorer driven by 20-year-old Taylor Richardson of Las Vegas was westbound on Tropical Parkway near its intersection with Bradley Road. The intersection is south of the 215 Beltway between Jones and Decatur boulevards. Authorities said the bicyclist was southbound on the west side of Bradley and tried to cross Tropical at the crosswalk when she was hit by the Explorer, which had been stopped at a stop sign. Police said the impact knocked the girl to the ground.

Taylor told police she was unable to see the child because the sun was in her eyes.

The girl was taken to University Medical Center with injuries police called "serious to critical."

The accident remains under investigation.
