Letter to the editor:

Anti-tax protests are an embarrassment

Thursday, April 16, 2009 | 2:04 a.m.

I bet the Fox News advocates were getting ready for the great conservative Tea Party this week. What a disgrace. How ridiculous and embarrassing this must look to the rest of the world.

For the past week (24/7), Fox News has been promoting this tea party (sort of like an infomercial). Fox News’ mentality and that of its followers never ceases to amaze me. They just don’t get it. The GOP is the minority party and the conservatives’ desperation is becoming outrageous and is almost laughable.

Why they don’t use all this energy and vigor toward helping our (yes, our) president work on the many problems he is trying to solve, is beyond me. Never have I witnessed anything so shameful and disturbing at a time when this country of ours should be united.

Discussion: 55 comments so far…

  1. HEY LaRue, these country was started up by people who could care less about the rest of the world and what they though of us, and that go,s for me too. Are tax policys are nobodys business but are,s, And if you don,t like it then pack your bags and find some SOCIALIST STATE TO LIVE IN. LaRue that,s French right

  2. Not since William Randolph Hearst have we seen a news organization that is more interested in making news rather than reporting it. Fox News has crossed the line into the arena of tabloid journalism with it's recent promotion of "tea parties" across the country that were staged to protest fictitious tax increases and a perceived socialist agenda. While trying to defend their unabashed support of these bogus tea parties, Fox's Neil Cavuto cited Fox's past fearless coverage of similar past unpopular events such as the Million Man March which took place in October, 1995. Unfortunately for Mr. Cavuto Fox News did not go on the air until October of 1996, a year after the event took place.
This is just one small example of the "misstatements" that come from Fox News commentators on a regular basis. Sean Hannity is the unbridled leader of deceitfulness at Fox. His past assertions that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction and that Saddam had ties to al Qaeda, are just a few instances of his fraudulent reports that go unretracted and sway viewers to his extremist views.
Most Americans have a limited amount of time to get their news. We expect the information we get to be accurate and not manufactured. Fox News does not meet the minimum standards required for objective news reporting and commentary. They deserve the moniker "Faux News".

  3. The Tea Parties were incredible. People expressing their outrage over the intrusion of the federal government in our lives. If these had been gay acivist or anti war demonstrations the liberal lunatics would have been cheering in the aisles. Liberals are obsessed with Fox News--great to see a newstation getting so much attention from a bunch of leftist
nutcases. At least they are watching. Maybe their little pinhead minds will be expanded. Let's hope!

  4. The protest was fine. Fox's "sponsorship" of the protest is disturbing. They are now crafting news, not reporting it.
    Shades of Pravda.

  5. Houstonjac,

What have you wanted to do in the last month or two that you could not do?

  6. Powerplay,

Isn't it about time for you to go back to school and learn how to spell.

  7. uddeboda,
Let Powerplay run free. Don,t stop hymm or hur.
    We need the comic relief!

  8. Uddeboda... isn't THAT pathetic?
As for these "tea parties" the Queen could've turned up to serve crumpets and Fox still wouldn't be able to get more than a few die-hard
    anti-tax nutcases to show up.

  9. How embarrissing for LaRue. A huge rant about fox news and a picture of Walt standing there at the ralley.

  10. Whats wrong with people who pay taxes protesting how much they pay? Or is it just the coverage? The MSM enjoys covering people who don't pay taxes wanting more.

  11. The Mayor of Denver said on the radio this morning that he didn't know the reason for the "Tea Party" protest as taxes have gone down for the majority of American's. I guess the "tea party" was a little misrepresented, was it about taxes or bailouts? Were the people protesting teachers, police officers, or fireman? I sure hope not! They'd be doing themselves a huge disservice.

And POWERPLAY.... *our* nation is more socialistic than it's ever been. It's been this way for a long time. Privatize the profits, socialize the loses.

Most people who complain about socialism do so until they're unemployed and have lost their benefits. Then guess what happens? They decide socialism isn't so bad... I guess it depends which side of the fence you're on!

And finally POWERPLAY, I suggest someone like you embrace socialism as it's only a matter of time before you're at the bottom rung of society.

  12. Go for it POWERPLAY!Tea Party protests were about massive intrusion of government in our lives under this new administration. Now HLS has has warned us about returning war vets being extreme right wing radicals that might be terrorist threats. This is the Obhama administration in action. Give a company some money and fire their top execs. Spend trillions on social welfare and saddle the future generations with massive tax bills. Instigate class warfare as a means of taking money from those who earn it, and giving it to those who are
wards of the welfare state. The best message for those who are unhappy with these new policies is to fight back--protest, vote these liberal whackheads out of office. All the concerns that were described during the campaign about Obama, and his liberal, leftist agenda are coming home to roost. The right response is to PUSH BACK.

  13. ROFL @ "POWERPLAY's" comment. Or is it POWERPLAY,S?

  14. The biggest difference between the Tea Party protests and the once scheduled by liberal groups like ACORN or the SEIU is no one paid yesterdays protesters, they just came because they want to be heard.

  15. What no "walking around money" that usually gets doled out to ACORN to pay for "pizza" and what not?

  16. any form of protest to stop socialism in america is a plus...i thought i saw america at its best yesterday...freedom of expression, non violence...the people being heard....it was a wonderful day...wake up liberals...something big is coming

  17. The funniest part about yesterday and the way the libs are whining about it is this; if this were an abortion rally, a anti-war rally or a pro-gay rally they would be dancing naked around the bon-fire they would be so happy.

Since this is PERCEIVED as an anti-Obama rally they are going nuts twitching and frothing. Between the tea parties and the Fox news channel the apopleptic left is on suicide watch. The entertainment value of this alone was worth losing the election.

I wonder if they pipe Fox news into the cells at Gitmo as a form of torture? LOL ROFLMAO

  18. These dunces weren't even smart enough to realize the taxes they were protesting, the taxes due yesterday, were from fiscal 2008. Obama wasn't even President yet.

Suicide watch? Did you watch Rachel Maddow yesterday, getalife? Ana Marie Cox ruthelessly humiliating the teabaggers? Not what I would call suicide watch, but whatever you want to believe! Tune in to the end for a classic Glenn Beck neologism.

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26315908/#30...

Or perhaps you prefer Jon Stewart? We know you all LOVE Jon Stewart!

    http://www.hulu.com/watch/68144/the-dail...

Twitching and frothing? From LAUGHTER at seeing pictures of the inept. The millionteabags.0rg morons having to take their teabags BACK, the genius who thought it would be smart to throw small packets of an unknown substance onto the white house lawn? Geniuses!

I guess they thought that a terrorism alert at the White House is the best way to whine about taxes?

  19. These protests were completely moronic, not to mention somewhat disruptive. I am glad the police presence kept them in line for the most part, as it was complicating things for many people who needed to get their taxes in the mail. Those of us who would like to simply get on with our civic duty should not be forced to deal with loud & ill-informed mobs.

Hel-LO, the past 8 years called to remind you that it was THEIR president/administration which messed up the economy.

We live in a democracy- majority rules. Obama won by a clear and decisive margin. Deal with it.

  20. I saw a quote from one of the organizers who called these protests "the LARGEST grass roots movement in history".

Sadly, most only had a few hundred people. And in one city, the turnout was half the number of people who showed up for a dog show the week before.

In Tampa, less than half the number of people showed up than attended the Tampa Bay Lightning game last week. I believe the Lightning might be in last place in the league.

By all means, continue protesting. It's actually healthy for democracy. However, stay on the subject. I mean seriously, there were people out there with signs comparing Obama to Hitler. Wow.

  21. "We (Treasure Island) pay $20,000 in property taxes A DAY so we PAY A LOT of taxes," -- Phil Ruffin.

Anyone up for some tea at the T.I. today?

  22. I always wondered who the loyal Bushies were. You know, the 20% or so who still lovingly approved of George W. Bush even in the face of his disastrous policies.

Then I turned on the news last night and saw them at these rallies... all out carrying signs about the evils of government spending. Granted, when you ask them about the massive increase in defense spending, they're liable to go into histrionic rage, but it was good to get them out there and visible to the rest of us.

Make no mistake, these are the same people who voted for Bush in 2000, and 2004, who donate billions to the RNC, who reelect Republican members of Congress without questioning those members' spending habits. They gave George W. Bush the most significant endorsement one could give a candidate: their vote.

They don't see the glaring hypocrisy in throwing a temper tantrum about government spending while supporting the party that had to vote to raise the national debt ceiling because Bush and his slaves in the Congress couldn't control their spending habits.

Nope, these simpletons just keep reelecting the same old Republicans, who smile and say they're for "fiscal discipline" right before they go to Washington to explode the national debt. They're the ones holding the "Don't blame me, I voted for Sarah!" posters. Sarah Palin, the earmark queen.

Congratulations, teabaggers, you've been conned by a national party which ignores your pity parties while demanding more cash. Take pride in your protest, but understand that most of us are laughing at you, not with you.

  23. Those claiming anti-tax protests are an embarrassment should be forced to list all the taxes and fees (directly and indirectly) currently being imposed upon such protesters.

  24. A bunch of low life White trash were the ones protesting. Most of which pay little taxes.

Obama lowered taxes for most people. These people should leave the U.S. if hey are not happy.

You heard me, America, love it or leave it.

  25. Low life White trash? LOL

OK, if you think that government is entitled to more of your money.......here's your sign.

If you think that government can spend your money more wisely than you can.....here's your sign.

If you think that government can spend its way to prosperity......here's your sign.

If you think that government has your best interest and not theirs first and foremost in their mind......here's your sign.

  26. Judging from the Left-Wing Loon Society comments that are on this board, we should get on our hands and knees and be oh so thankful for Obama for rescuing us wretched souls. We wandered lost for eight years in search of the Holy One to lead us out of despair and then when He appeared before us with His wisdom and all encompassing knowledge we, the unwashed, were too dazed to understand His greatness and we voted against Him. The greater good of our society rescued us from ourselves and voted Him into office. Now we have a chance to repent and foresake our evil ways and get on board the good ship lollipop and float out to sea on empty promises and the windbag himself providing air for our sails.

Unfortunately this is what the left truly thinks, except the last part I made that up.

Good luck, blindly following the "chosen one". I just love the comments about blind devotion to Pres. Bush made by people who have blind devotion to Obama.

  27. Man, those wackjobs on the right are still making some sort of connection between Jesus and Obama? Don't they know Obama's just the President?

I love how they desperately spin a positive view of the President as "blind devotion." Did you know that more than 60% (by most polls) have blind devotion to President Obama? Sounds kinda like wingnut logic there, doesn't it?

Getalife, how many Republican anti-spending protests were there during Bush's reign?

    Can you name ONE?

    Nope!

How many tea party protests with teabagging?

    None?

    Yup!

Are all these whining ninnies hypocrites?

    Yup!

  28. Funny how the Republitards are all up in arms over "taxes" and "spending" (even though the new Prez is giving the majority of us poor saps making less than $250k a year a tax CUT), yet they had no problem when Dubya was spending $10 billion a month funding the Iraqi war.

I guess that to them, spending our tax money on trying to help the economy and trying to help US is "wasteful spending", but spending our tax money fighting a stupid, needless war is ok.

  29. The left is funny.

They say that Bush's doubled the debt and that is bad.

Then Obama's plan is to triple the debt and they say that is OK.

Which is it??????? Is doubling the debt bad?

So you must be really pissed at Obama for planning to triple the debt (that is 3x's the amount of all debt from GW to GB).

  31. Sand, I fully realize Obama is a man and is also the POTUS. What I don't understand is how people like you are so afraid of things like Fox news, reality, small government and REAL tax cuts.

I did not give Pres. Bush a pass when he was giving away the store, don't put words on my keyboard.

This battle will rage and the Libs and Conservatives will all go out and have a beer one day.

Hey, I just saw on FOX news that Obama is in Mexico is that also untrue?

  32. As usual, jfNance32 runs screaming and yelling past the point.

Let me put this in really simple terms so that he might, MIGHT understand.

Going into debt so that we can fight an unnecessary war? BAD.

Going into debt so that we can pay for health care for sick children? OK.

Going into debt while corporations sock money away in the Cayman Islands? BAD.

Going into debt to pay for enhanced Veterans benefits? OK.

You didn't answer my question: Where were these protests when Bush was in charge? Can't you see the seething hypocrisy of doing this NOW, after the fact?

As usual, you just don't get it. I'm thinking you CAN'T get it.

getalife, of all the things I fear (closed-minded morons, bigots, Glenn Beck's ability to bore grown men into fainting spells), Fox is not on the list. Fox isn't to be feared, but I think it's funny how you, jfNance32 and the like are so in denial. I accept that MSNBC and CNN have a liberal viewpoint. Why won't you both admit that FOX has a right-wing viewpoint? It's kinda cowardly to avoid that question!

But I had to laugh at your "REAL tax cuts." You mean tax cuts only for the wealthy, right? That top tier? Only tax cuts for the top tier are "REAL," right? LOL!

"I did not give Pres. Bush a pass when he was giving away the store, don't put words on my keyboard."

So, tell me, where were these people, this "BIGGEST GRASS-ROOTS MOVEMENT IN HISTORY" four years ago? They weren't demonstrating. They weren't teabagging. They were voting for Bush.

    Hypocrites, the lot of 'em!

  33. Thanks for the 411, ksand99.

Democrats and libs are A-Ok with adding nearly $14 trillion in deficits and tripling the debt on our children.

Can I put that in a TV ad?

  34. Well, genius, since you still don't understand the concept of HASTY GENERALIZATION, no, you cannot.

Again, let me choose small, simple words so that you can understand. Please try this time. I know I am asking SO MUCH of you, but just TRY.

*I* wrote that *I* think that adding debt to pay for veterans benefits and health care for children is ok.

I did not write that ALL DEMOCRATS think that way. Nor did I write that ALL LIBERALS think that way.

You can air your dumb commercial that says: "Kevin Sandoval thinks it's ok to take on debt for child health care and veterans benefits. He also thinks that it's bad to take on debt for an unnecessary war."

Is that simple enough for you?

How sad that one person says something and you ASSUME that all people think that way. That's pretty dumb.

  35. Hey don't hate i need working people to pay higher taxes because i need my food stamps and free health care. I have 12 kids and they need a place to live so the government needs to tax extra. if u work you have money so u can pay. I don't work cuz that's what the welfare is for. We need to keep having democrats so we can eventually get money for hair die and free cars. If someone worked hard to own or start a bussiness they should get taxed since they have money.

  36. OK.....ksand99 thinks that adding 14 trillion in deficits and tripling the debt on childrens is A-OK.

    (lol)

Obama must think it is A-OK because he is doing.

Reid, Pelosi, Titus along with most Democrats in the Senate and the House must think it is A-OK because they voted for Obama's budget.

For now, according to Ksand99, we can not say if all Democrats and Libs are for it. I hope to God that there are some Dems and Libs who think it is rotten to this to our children.

  37. No, I'm honored you think I speak for and represent all Democrats AND all liberals. I never knew you thought so much of me.

I'm also glad that you finally understand something so simple as "hasty generalizations are dumb." I had to dumb-down my language to get you there, but I'm proud of my accomplishment.

But have no doubt, you do not represent all Republicans, nor all conservatives. The sooner you recognize that, the better.

  38. "Fight nice, children"......just kidding and trying to lighten things up around here LOL. Please no offense meant.

  39. "I had to dumb-down my language "

You do that a lot. In fact, I have never seen you smart-up any of your postings.

I agree that saying Obama's plan to triple the national debt is A-OK is completely dumb.

  40. "You do that a lot. In fact, I have never seen you smart-up any of your postings."

Now jfNance32 is making up words. "Smart-up?" LOL! This coming from the guy who can't even spell responsibility correctly?

I'm glad you finally decided that your hasty generalizations were wrong and logically inconsistent. You're learning. Slowly... really, really slowly... but learning nonetheless.

  41. i said it once before and got bashed pretty good for it but here it comes again, 76 men signed a document protecting our rights! aimless men and boys died to fight for these rights! and with Obooma in office,he has taken that document and is useing it as paper to wipe the worlds butt! It was ok to bash on Bush but oh no we can do that with Obooma. The last 2 years he was in office, and we had democrates running the house, and yet they sat and did nothing! How about both parties take the blame for the mess, and stop bickering and just get the damn job done!!! STOP GIVEING OUR TAX DOLLARS AWAY! AND IF YOU ARE SO SET ON DOING SO,GIVE IT TO THE PEOPLE THAT ARE PUTTING IT IN! GIVE IT BACK TO THE PEOPLE!!!

  42. Rumrunner...all I can say is THANK YOU for continuing to make the case against the Republican party. You probably won't understand why I am telling you this...but seriously, big ups for your unintentional support.

Big ups also to the blatantly racist KKKlan members at the Tea Bag rallys...thank you, thank you, thank you for bringing along your snarky, xenophobic, racist signage to the events. You did more to advance the democratic agenda yesterday than the Democrats could ever imagine doing themselves. I, for one, look forward to the July 4th debacle. With a cherry on top.

Hint - if you're mad about high taxes or bailouts, perhaps it's wise to leave the racist, xenophobic comments at home. Your message MIGHT have more impact that way.

Oh, and feel free to stay ignorant of any sort of understanding or relative grasp of the terms fascism or socialism. Having a BA in sociology myself, I always found 'projection' to be an amazingly interesting human phenomenon. Look it up sometime, con.

And please, please, please elect Sarah Palin as the (r) candidate in 2012. I am begging you, for the sake of the country. More Sarah Palin please.

  43. Sarah Palin and Mitt Romney must beat Barack Obama and Joe Biden in 2012 because they are of the superior conservative right wing philosophy in that they are pro God and Christianity, pro life, pro marriage; pro guns-second amendment, pro low taxes, pro low government spending; pro small government, pro unintrusive government, pro traditional and judeo Christian values; pro Bible reading and prayer in our public schools, pro Christians schools and private education , pro private and free enterprise; pro military spending, anti arms agreements with Russia, pro creation; pro nuclear, pro conservative supreme court judges, pro American sovereignty; pro capitalism, anti communist, anti socialist; anti immigration, and pro constitution.Barack Obama and Joe Biden are of the inferior liberal and left wing ideology in that they are against every thing that Sarah Palin and Mitt Ronmney are for and they are for every thing that Sarah Palin and Mitt Romney are against

    Palin-Romney 2012 or Romney-Palin 2012

  44. Yes, please put Palin and Romney on the ticket. We all need a good laugh.

That will save Obama some time with campaigning and allow him to stay focused on addressing the real problems this country faces, not bothering with ideology battles.

  45. Powerpoint wrote that "these [this] country was started up by people who could care less about the rest of the world and what they though [thought] of us."

In fact, those who started this country cared a great deal about what the rest of the world thought because they were looking for allies, and they found one in France, which won the revolution for us by providing most of the troops and all of the navy at Yorktown.

In addition, for those making political use of the Boston tea party, it would be useful to them to know that the party was not a protest against government "raising taxes." It was a protest against government REDUCING taxes. Parliament removed taxes from British tea to make it more competitive with tea smuggled (by John Hancock, among others) into the colonies. The "red Indians" who held the Boston tea party were demanding HIGHER taxes. And, as many this year have observed, it was an anti-corporate revolt against the British East India Company and its sweetheart relationship with the British government.

  46. I see a Republican party awash in troubled waters. The first thing that comes out of a political debacle like theirs in November 2008 is a fringe element of kooks who think they know the answer. The answer is the Democrats won fair and square, they have the reins, and let's sit back and wait for 4 years and then take action again.

  47. The 1st thing Obama/Reid/Titus/Democrats did was to rise taxes including taxes on the poor.

Now they want to triple the national debt on our children.

    Boy....are they taking action.

  48. DennisMyers wrote:

Care to explain how those "smuggling" 'Red Indians' of 1773 had any taxing authority, let alone demanded HIGHER taxes?

    LOL

  49. 300,000+ people go out and peacefully demonstrate all across the country that they are not happy with how the government is handling things and somehow this is an embarrassment. Only in the liberal mind.

It's nice to see the professional commenters are still out in full force after the election. How much does bHo or the DuNCe pay you guys anyway?

  50. You do not get it and must have skipped 5th grade history.

There were protesting a British government that was denying them any representation and using its abusive power without regard to the colonists' interest.

The British government was using its power to favor a non-colony corporation over a British corporation.

It is very similar to today.

Many feel that DC fails to represent them. They feel that Bush and Republicans did not represent them. They feel that Obama and the Democrats do not represent them.

All the spending and taxation is done without any regard to them. It is just how the colonist felt when they were dumping the tea into the harbor. It was a protest against the British government use of power and denial of representation in the parliament to address that abuse of power.

  51. Law that allows taxation can't be respected because taxation is an unjust form of theft, a mandate under force of possession, a moral wrong (why do think religious cults refuse to pay taxes, who gave them the authority of exemption?), in which penalties aren't equally applied. Unjusty entitling preference in the form of the authoritive (power) of one people over another. Taxation is the hypocrisy of what's right and just in accordance to the law as well as moral belief.

As for force (enforcement), the way of the world is by force as seen by the function of a full time military (as opposed to a militia) which is not tasked to protect the lives of those that sponsor or participate in it, but rather the ideal's of those that sponsor and participate in it i.e. their government, laws, beliefs, invasions, hyprocrisies, immoralities.

Protesting against taxation is protesting against the immoralities of legalized theft.

    "Anti-tax protesters are an embarrassment"?

    LOL

    Quite the opposite.

    LOL

  52. Teabags/teabaggers and their phony outrage (known as teabaggery) sure are funny!

And when I say funny...do I mean 'ha ha', or 'odd'?

The correct answer (of course) is 'both'.

  53. It is by sad and helpful that there are people like theSmirk.

It is sad that they want to so uncivil in their support of their ideas.

On the other hand, it really hurts their cause with is good for America.

  54. JFinance32: "they want to so uncivil"? "It really hurts their cause with is good"?

Oh man - I hope this teabag is better with finance than he is with words!

  55. We been looking "Ridiculous and Embarrassing to the rest of the World" for the last 8 yrs so why should this be any different now?
