Gibbons requests meeting with Obama in Las Vegas

Tuesday, April 7, 2009 | 3:18 p.m.

Gov. Jim Gibbons wants to meet with President Barack Obama next month when the president visits in Las Vegas.

The governor wrote a letter today requesting time with the president to discuss the economic difficulties facing the state's tourism industry. In a statement, the governor said he hopes to address the president's comment made earlier this year about the perception of trips to Las Vegas.

“I think a face-to-face meeting between the president, myself, and Nevada business leaders would do a lot to help overcome the perception that President Obama finds visiting Las Vegas somehow offensive,” Gibbons said, “If President Obama can come to Las Vegas to ask for political campaign cash, he can certainly take some time to explore helping the people who live and work here, we are all Americans.”

The president will visit Las Vegas on May 26 during a fundraiser for Sen. Harry Reid.

"Nevada is not only a place to have fun, we are also a place where people from around the world conduct business," the governor's letter said.
