- Carlos Santana inks two-year deal at The Joint (3-31-2009)
- An early look at the new Joint (2-19-2009)
- Snuffing out The Joint with Motley Crue (2-7-2009)
Confirming a Sun report from Tuesday night, the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino announced today that Carlos Santana will be the first resident performer at the new Joint concert venue.
“Supernatural Santana: A Trip Through the Hits” will open on May 27. The show is said to be a musical retrospective of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame icon’s career, and is expected to feature songs from across the artist’s legendary career.
The deal will see Santana play about 36 shows a year at the Joint. The new, 2,591-seat, $60-million venue is set to open later this month.
The residency also guarantees The Joint will be the only place to see Santana perform this side of the Mississippi through 2010.
A range of speculation and wishful thinking about the residency gig was floating around prior to this morning’s release, including The Killers, who will open The Joint on April 17, Paul McCartney, who plays on April 19, and even Vince Neil. Today’s announcement, however, finally put the rumors to rest and confirmed a Sun report from Tuesday night from celebrity reporter Robin Leach, who blogs for the Sun and is host of our sister Web site, Vegas DeLuxe.
Santana, 61, called the resident gig “an honor.”
“‘A Trip Through The Hits’ is designed to bring everyone in the audience together as one," the self-described “hippie at heart” said. "We'll mix up a little practical spirituality with a rebel-from-the-street vibe, and with lots of incredible music. My wish is for it to be a night that will move you to dance, to cry, to laugh and to feel the totality and fullness of being alive."
The 11-time Grammy Award winner has sold more than 90 million records and performed for over 100 million people across the world.
Santana’s first hit single, "Jingo,” shot to the top of the charts in 1969. His most recent release was his 2007 collaboration with Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger, “Into the Night.”
The legendary rocker is being billed as Vegas’ first real rock n’ roll resident show.
"The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino is thrilled to be the first to house a true rock resident show at our brand-new, state-of-the-art venue," president and COO of Morgans Hotel Group Las Vegas and Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Randy Kwasniewski, said.
"Bringing Santana to The Joint at Hard Rock elevates the entertainment options in Las Vegas," said John Meglen, president & co-CEO of AEG Live/Concerts West. "AEG Live set the standard for major residency shows in Vegas with Celine, Elton, Cher and Bette over at The Colosseum, and now we are setting the standard for rock and roll residencies with this new deal."
Joining Santana at the Hard Rock will be Chester Thompson (keyboards), Karl Perazzo (timbales), Benny Rietveld (bass), Dennis Chambers (drums), Raul Rekow (congas), Andy Vargas (vocals), Tony Lindsay (vocals), Tommy Anthony (rhythm guitar), Jeff Cressman (trombone) and Bill Ortiz (trumpet).
Tickets for “Supernatural Santana: A Trip Through the Hits” are on sale now. Prices range from $79 to $299 and are available at the Hard Rock Hotel box office and Ticketmaster.

At Hard Rock, it's all about the music. From the light fixtures made out of drum cymbals and guitar shaped door handles to stage costumes and tools of the trade of legendary musicians displayed on the walls, the hotel screams rock and roll. The Hard Rock's Joint has hosted some the biggest names in music — from The Who to Bob Dylan to hometown heroes, The Killers.
Aside from the music venues, the pool at the Hard Rock is one of its biggest attractions. Spread out over 4.7 acres, the pool area features swim-up blackjack, a bar and grill, private cabanas, a bevy of secluded nooks, a waterfall and an extensive live music venue with a dance floor. During the summer, the pool transforms into the Rehab club on Sunday afternoons. The resident nightclub Body English fuses European elegance with a rock star bachelor pad and it often a hot spot for visiting celebs and popular DJs. Vintage rock memorabilia lines the walls at Wasted Space, Hard Rock's anti-club.
Restaurants at Hard Rock are just as hip as the rest of the casino. Pink Taco serves up Mexican dishes, as well as a Central American and Caribbean menu. Nobu, one of five worldwide Japanese-specialty restaurants from famed Nobu Matsuhisa, satisfies a different taste. For round-the-clock cuisine, Mr. Lucky's 24/7, is sure to ease your appetite even after a Vegas-all-nighter.
