In his words: Guard Oscar Bellfield reviews the UNLV roster

Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008 | 12:20 p.m.

New UNLV guard Oscar Bellfield played pick-up ball with his new teammates most of the summer.

To say the least, he likes the talent on the squad.

“We all went at each other, trying to make each other better,” Bellfield said. “There will be many highlights this season, flying action, threes after threes, dunks after dunks.

“We have strong backup guards, big men, everything. We have the full package. It’ll be very exciting.”

We turned to Bellfield for a more detailed review of his new teammates who will get the most action in 2008-09:

  • Senior guard Wink Adams – He gave me big challenges. I had little moments. Still, he came right back at me. People will have a hard time guarding him.
  • Senior forward Joe Darger – Automatic jump shot, in your face or wide open. Automatic.
  • Freshman center Beas Hamga – He gets better each day, blocking shots, dunking, finishing, catching the ball.
  • Junior guard Scott Hoffman – Automatic from the three.
  • Freshman forward/center Brice Massamba – He finishes nice, and he’ll dish out assists from the post.
  • Freshman forward DeShawn Mitchell – High-flying action. He jumps from everywhere, over everyone.
  • Senior guard/forward Rene Rougeau – Aggressive. He can jump higher than I thought he could. He’s athletic. And he can shoot that three, down pat.
  • Senior guard Mareceo Rutledge – He has a nice jump shot and he finishes. Unstoppable. He makes every layup -- we were just saying that today. He finishes all kinds of stuff, takes the hit and lays it in. Everything.
  • Junior forward Darris Santee – Has a nice inside-outside game. He can shoot, go to the rack, tip dunks … he also has some post moves.
  • Sophomore guard Kendall Wallace – He has handles. He can be the one, and he shoots well, too.
  • Sophomore guard Tre’Von Willis – He has good aggressiveness. He’s ready to go off this season. I see it in him.
