Nevada emergency team to assist in hurricane aftermath

Friday, Sept. 5, 2008 | 5:07 p.m.

Nevada Task Force One, a 34-member emergency response team, had been preparing to head home today from Houston, Texas, but new orders are sending the team to Montgomery, Ala., Clark County Fire Department spokesman Scott Allison said.

With 28 emergency workers and six drivers, the team responded to Hurricane Gustav, but did not continue to Louisiana, Allison said.

The team then prepared to come home today, but new orders from federal Homeland Security officials call for them to head for Alabama at 6 a.m. Sunday, Allison said.

As Hurricane Hanna headed up the East Coast, Nevada's team will prepare for Hurricane Ike, which the National Hurricane Center said today could reach Category 4 strength with winds of more than 150 mph by the time it arrives in the Florida Keys. After that, Ike's projected path is along the western coast of Florida, forecasters said.
