Letter to the editor:

We need a ‘take charge’ president

Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008 | 2:04 a.m.

Ken Anderson had it partially right in his Saturday letter to the editor headlined “To win, McCain must be honest about Bush”:

President Bush has not been a very good leader in many areas. However, unless the next president leads and stands up to Congress, we will not see many changes that matter.

The next president, be he Obama or McCain, must insist that Congress does the following: Ensure that tax revenues are sufficient to cover government expenditures — in other words, a balanced budget and no more accounting gimmicks and deficits.

To accomplish this goal two things need to happen: Some government programs must be eliminated and taxes on some group must be raised. I don’t hear either McCain or Obama talking about that in any detail, which leads me to believe that despite all their rhetoric, it’s going to be business as usual in 2009 and beyond.

  1. Take a look back. The revenues being collected today are at the levels projected back in the late 90's by CBO and Clinton.

Its spending and John McCain will hold Congress to slow spending

  2. McCain's 4-year tenure is expected to have $5 TRILLION national debt, the highest national debt in the history of the United States.

Even Obama's economic plan, with tax cuts for the middle class and his universal health care plan, does not create such a phenominal national debt.

Simply put, McCain promises to balance the budget "sometime" in the next four years, but the economists laugh.

He's following in the footsteps of the Bush administration, adopting their disastrous economic policies and tax cuts for the wealthy that have failed these past eight years.

His economic plan call on borrowing more from China and Dubai, further placing more crushing debt on the next generation of Americans.

    We don't need McCain.

  3. Obama's middle class tax cut is going to give $1.95 a day extra over McCain's tax plan. Wooooeeeee Cheesburgers each day!!!!!

Obama's tax plan is going to heavily increase taxes on capital job creation investments. We really do not need jobs in Vegas.

McCain is going to increase job creation tax incentives not decrease them. McCain's plan is pro-growth.

McCain is promising to balance the budge by cutting spending.

Obama has tons of new spending that many say are not paid for. He is promising at least $400 billion a year in deficit spending. He's plan is based on savings estimates on health care that many say will never come to past much less in 4 years. Some say he will produce the first trillion dollar budget.

Obama's plan is similar to Jimmy Carter's way of governing.

We need someone that has a history of reaching accross the aisle on major tough bills. McCain has done that and Obama has not done it.

We need someone that has a history of standing up to their own party. Neither Biden or Obama has ever done that on a corruption or a major bill. Democrats have never called Biden or Obama as being unfaithful to the party's wants and needs. McCain and Palin has taken grief from their own party for thier stands.

We need leadership. We need McCain/Palin.

  4. Nance, how is a $5 trillion national debt "pro-growth?"

How is Palin's track record of taking a balanced budget and leaving the town of Wasilla $22 million in debt "pro-growth."

How is Palin's request, just this year, for $200 million in more earmarks for Alaska "standing up to her party?"

    LOL!

You want to create jobs by borrowing money from China? That's the most boneheaded economic policy I've heard yet.

Open your eyes and look at McCain/Palin's records and plans. $5 trillion in debt and you're a cheerleader for them?

You just blindly believe anything Limbaugh tells you. What a joke.

  5. There is a great editorial in the Washinton Post today about Sarah Palin. Here is the best paragraph:

"Ms. Palin describes herself as a "hard-core fiscal conservative." But she has not signed the anti-tax pledge pushed by Grover Norquist's American Taxpayers Union. In fact, Ms. Palin supported Wasilla's first-ever sales tax and pushed to raise it as mayor (while simultaneously reducing property taxes); as governor, she increased taxes on oil companies. In 1994, she advocated a flat tax in a campaign ad for a Republican Senate candidate. "

She paid a lobbyist to score $27,000,000 in earmarks for a town of 7000 people. As governor, she asked for $200,000,000?

This is more of the same! And they don't even know her positions on the ISSUES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a really bad joke, right? Why are the republicans going to nominate her for vice president without knowing where she stands on stuff like WAR!!!!!!

  6. For all those that have commented on my comment, I thank you. However, people need to understand that Congress is where the real problem is. Every year Congress spends much more than it takes in. It rarely cuts spending, rarely eliminates a government program, fails in its oversight responsibility, pits one group against another (rich versus middle class these days) when discussing tax increases and just continues to create a bigger and bigger deficit. Even when former President Clinton claimed (along with Congress) to have eliminated the deficit, it was a lie, based upon foolish accounting gimmics. This has to stop and we must demand that whoever becomes President pushes a balanced budget amendment and fiscal restraint in Congress.

  7. And now they're 'taking charge' of our money again to the tune of a billion plus ships sent to Georgia - why in the hell is the US getting involved in THAT fiasco? When will our ever constant sticking of the nose in other peoples problems ever stop. I'd like to see the government so willingly fork over a billion to pay for some life saving operations for little American children instead. We certainly can't be expected to believe we have a say in what happens with our hard-earned tax dollars when a decision is made this quickly to send it to Georgia - where was there time for anyone to take a 'vote' on it? Lord save us all - this country is surely going to hell in a handbasket and there's no relief in sight.

  8. I have to agree with you on that, azsk8fan. I've thought this for awhile now; each year the feeling becomes more and more intense.

I wonder, though, if we're yet at the point of no return. Some days it sure feels that way.

  9. Obama is promising....promising no attempts to cut into the budget deficit....he is not even going to try!

Many are saying his 1,000 of new spending programs and increases are not paid for. Some are saying that he is on target to create the first trillion deficit.

McCain is promising to cut spending and balance the budget.

McCain has a record of being a budget hawk.

Obama has no record on on being a budget hawk. He has promise to spend more and more and more and more.

  10. LOL, "promising" to cut spending and balance the budget?

    Did he pinky-swear you, Nance?

When given the choice of any Republican he wanted, Ridge, Lieberman, Pawlenty, Romney, he chose a "tax-and-spend and then borrow more and spend" calendar girl.

He held her up as an example.

And you seem to fully support her.

You still haven't answered my question, though, so I'll pose it again: how is a $5 trillion national debt "pro-growth?"

How is Palin's track record of taking a balanced budget and leaving the town of Wasilla $22 million in debt "pro-growth."

How is Palin's request, just this year, for $200 million in more earmarks for Alaska "standing up to her party?"

Cognitive dissonance, Nance. Look it up!

  11. Obama is PROMISING MORE AND MORE AND MORE AND MORE SPENDING.

Obama is PROMISING NOT TO CUT THE DEFICIT BY ONE CENT.

Obama's plan is anti-growth. He wants to reduce the incentive to invest in job creation capital investment.

I will give Obama credit. He is offering to the middle class $1.95 a day tax cuts over McCain's plan. It is called, the Grow The Sales at McDonald's plan.

  12. Run away, Nance! Run away! Back to the safety of your debunked talking points!

  13. PatriciaLV, if we're not at the point of no return (and believe me I sincerely hope we're not) then all I can say is that it's frightening how close we really are. Ya know, 'too close for comfort' and all that.........

  14. This is funny. He is very mad that Obama wants to spend more, and thinks that is awful.

But he doesn't seem to get it. Obama's increasing spending, giving tax breaks to the middle class, and still will have less of a national debt than McCain!

Barack Obama has promised tax breaks to small business owners and entrepreneurs. He said he will not raise the capital gains taxes on them.

But jfnance32 just doesn't get it. He just repeats himself over and over, without opening his eyes and seeing that John McCain's plan for the economy, based on jfnance32's own argument, is WORSE FOR US!!!!!!!

He thinks Barack Obama's plan is awful and will ruin the economy, but won't admit the harsh truth that John McCain's plan takes Barack Obama's national debt and ADDS MORE!!!!!

I don't think jfnance32 knows much about economics.

  15. I'm quite sure Barack will be very happy to look out for the best interests of all the small minority business owners and entrepreneurs...but I have my serious doubts he will do the same favor for 'whitey'.

  16. Azsk8fan, your racism has no place here.

  17. Obamanomics....raising taxes on capital job creation investments will create jobs.

LOL.......yeah....he is expert on the economy.

  18. I'll take your silence as agreement that McCain's economic plans are worse than Obama's.

    You've been schooled today, Nance.

  19. Call it what you want - the facts are in his books - in his own words - through his 20 yr association with HIS racist minister - I prefer to call it as I see it.

  20. Oh and by the way, Thebs, Racism has no place in the White House either - go tell that to Obama would ya please.

And further - if I had a Black parent AND a White parent I would have the ballz to correct the press everytime they referred to me as African-American - I would kindly remind them that as the product of two (count em) TWO races I prefer to be classified as I properly should be - BI-RACIAL - lest we demean one parents role in my very existence. Has he even ONCE tried to tell the press that while race shouldn't even BE an issue if they are going to persist (and obviously they are) in making it a 'race thing' at least get it right - BI-RACIAL - get it? I think the very fact that he DOESN'T seem to want to acknowledge his caucasian heritage is quite indicative of racism in its' ugliest form.

  21. You have not read his books azsk8fan. He speaks of his heritage, on both sides, very much.

Please cease and desist with the race baiting. This is not an apporpriate forum for that kind of nasty politics.

  22. Do not play the race card please.

Bill Clinton just asked me to tell Obama's campaign not to do that.

  23. Yes, actually I have read his words (books) and I take from them what I read - the words are out of his own mouth. So if you want to construe stating facts as racism be sure to cover both sides of the fence.

  24. I swear it so pathetic that people are so intimidated with 'political correctness' these days..........

  25. Well, I've heard him speak of his "mother" and his "father"; same as every other candidate in my memory. I've never heard him say "black father" OR "white mother". (No, I've not heard ALL of his speeches.) Why is it racist that he doesn't mention it? Would it be racist as well if he did?

Does it really make a difference one way or the other, az?

Equating silence with complicity (or in this case, "denial")is a mistake.

  26. Ok, Nance, future and others... let's make this perfectly simple:

    1. Do you support the idea of a state seceding from the US? Yes or no.

    2. Do you believe that Armageddon is approaching, and that the best way to speed it along is to empty our Nuclear arsenal upon others? Yes or no

Even you are smart enough to answer two simple questions-or are you just going to avoid/evade/spin/redirect/vilify/lie/demonize.

Real simple: answer or shut the heck up, until you can find at least one or two REAL facts, and not the junk that obviously you are unable to produce yourself, since I hear your exact words parroted by pundits before you get a chance to write them here (Can we say lack of individual thought?)

    Put up or shut up
