Two-alarm fire damages shopping center

Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008 | 4:23 p.m.

Three businesses in the Bonanza Nellis Shopping Center in northeastern Las Vegas were damaged in a two-alarm at about 12:55 p.m. today.

Tim Szymanski, spokesman for the Las Vegas Fire Department, said a smoke shop was gutted, and a restaurant, laundromat and attic area had smoke damage at the shopping center, 679 N. Nellis Blvd., Szymanski said. The damage was estimated at $200,000.

There were no injuries.

The fire appears to have started in an attic area over the smoke shop, investigators said. A worker heard a loud pop in the attic and then noticed smoke in the shop, Szymanski said.

Flames spread into the attic over a restaurant, but firefighters prevented the fire from entering the restaurant.

On the other side of the smoke shop, firefighters prevented the blaze from reaching a laundromat, Szymanski said. It had slight smoke damage.

The cause of the fire is undetermined, Szymanski said. Firefighters from Las Vegas, North Las Vegas and Clark County responded to the call.

  1. Oh no. Looks like the customers of these unnamed local beacons of identity in our pristine urban desert landscape will have to drive another 1/4 mile to the identical strip mall down the road to get their cigs.
