Southwest Las Vegas residents gathered at the grand opening Tuesday evening of the third Metro Police area command substation.
The Enterprise Area Command Substation, 6975 West Windmill Lane, was built after Metro Police outgrew a building opened in 1993 and relocates about 166 officers. The new building, which began operating July 11, houses more than 200 employees and serves 400,000 citizens covering more than 104 square miles.
After the ceremony, visitors got a look at the new facilities adorned with photographs of crime scene investigations, dramatic rescue missions and a memorial to Sgt. Henry Prendes, an officer killed in action.
Capt. Jim Dixon, the bureau’s commander, said the station oversees all patrol operations for the southwestern valley.
“I now have detectives down the hall with me so if you get burglarized or your car gets broken into, we’ll handle it in-house, which is better for us because we know your neighborhood,” he said.
Police said two more substations are expected in the next five years.
