Republicans squelch individual rights
I find it utterly amazing that Republicans will go to the polls and vote against their best interests and those of the country as a whole. I was a registered Republican for more than 40 years, until the wrongful impeachment of President Clinton by the Republicans.
Shortchanging students
A trend that is raising concern among educators nationwide — heavy use by school districts of long-term substitute teachers — is well established locally and has been for years.

GOP enthusiasm and Democratic tiptoeing
Politics, for the most part, is the art of illusion. And nowhere is that talent for prestidigitation so valued as during a presidential race, where a state senator four years removed is seen as not just presidential timber but almost godlike by his acolytes, and where an unknown governor of a far-removed state who has barely interacted with the standard-bearer is considered fit to be the proverbial heartbeat away.

Palin a superb choice to win women voters
When John McCain picked Sarah Palin as his running mate, I wondered what the Democrats would say about the selection. Saturday’s Sun editorial (“Sarah Who?”) and three letters in that day’s edition (“McCain makes mistake with VP pick,” “Lots of people equal to Palin,” and “Selection was an insult to women”) provided plenty of insight.

Democrats lack right kind of ‘experience’
Let’s look at who will be training whom in our presidential-vice presidential race.
Reacting to Gustav
Hurricane Gustav, thankfully, did not strike Louisiana with the same force Hurricane Katrina did in 2005, nor did Monday’s storm come close to claiming the 1,600 lives that were lost in New Orleans and along the Gulf Coast three years ago.
