Firefighters to set homes on fire

The Clark County Fire Department will set a home on fire Nov. 4.

As part of a training exercise involving the current rookie class that is set to graduate Nov. 21, homes at 7160 and 7180 Gilespie St., will be set on fire around 8 a.m., provided that the weather is not too dry and significant winds are not blowing.

Trainees will get hands-on experience working to extinguish the flames.

The house burn drills allow firefighters to learn the limits of their equipment and tactics in an educational, non-emergency environment.

The fires will be kept under control at all times and firefighters will take preventive measures to ensure the fire stays confined.

The public is invited to watch the exercise from a safe distance.

Man arrested in death of child

Police are investigating the death of a 2-year-old boy whose injuries appear consistent with child abuse.

Paramedics responded to a home on Aug. 8 and took the boy to a local hospital, where he died three days later.

An investigation revealed the victim and his family had relocated to the United States from Nigeria in December 2007. The child and his family were residing in the home of their local sponsor, Victor Fakoya and his family.

The toddler was left in the care of Fakoya, 40, on Aug. 8 when police said the abuse occurred.

Police arrested Fakoya on Oct. 24 and booked him into the Clark County Detention Center on one count of felony murder by child abuse.

Police would not confirm the address where the alleged attack occurred because a minor is involved.

County records show Fakoya owns a home at 8174 Maitai Ave., in West Valley near Spring Mountain and Cimarron roads.
