CARSON CITY – Gov. Jim Gibbons will be on the steps of the governor’s mansion handing out Halloween candy, but his estranged wife will not join him.

Gibbons’ communication director Ben Kieckhefer said Dawn Gibbons will not be present Friday night for the annual Halloween celebration in which the governor gives out treats to visiting children.

Kieckhefer said it was the governor’s decision that his wife not participate.

Dawn Gibbons could not be reached for comment.

In past years, scores of children in Halloween costumes have lined up for candy. In some cases, their parents snap pictures of the governor and their children. The tradition dates back to late Gov. Grant Sawyer in the late 1950s.

In May, Gibbons filed for divorce from Dawn. She has vacated the governor’s mansion and lives in the adjoining guest house.
