Ghering Elementary students collect recyclables, raise money

After announcing a new recycling program at the beginning of the school year, Roger D. Ghering Elementary is beginning to take new strides toward helping the environment and raising money for the school.

The school conducted its first recyclables collection for used electronics during its Oktoberfest event Oct. 17.

PTA member and past group president Steve Garnett said in an e-mail that about 40 phones, one computer, one iPod and more than 100 ink jets were collected during the event.

All items will be recycled in accordance with EPA regulations or refurbished and sold with 100 percent of the proceeds going to benefit the school.

Garnett said the public is welcome to drop off items during school events.

In addition to the aforementioned recyclable electronics, the school is looking to collect old gaming systems such as Nintendos or Playstations, digital cameras and digital video cameras.

The next collection will take place during the school’s Winter Creations event Wednesday, which runs 6-7:30 p.m. in the multipurpose room at the school, 1155 Richmar Ave.
