A memorial service for the 27-year-old woman who died in a crash on U.S. 95 Saturday has been scheduled for Wednesday.

The service will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Bunkers Mortuary, 925 Las Vegas Blvd. N. She then will be buried at Mount Hope Cemetery in Chicago on Saturday.

Kanisha Shanell Jones was born in Chicago and came to Las Vegas nine months ago. She was attending the University of Phoenix in Henderson for a master's in child education and already had a bachelor's degree in business. She is survived by three sisters and a brother, who live in Illinois.

More details about the nature of the crash in which two Las Vegas residents died of their injuries became available earlier today.

The head-on collision occurred on U.S. 95 northbound at about 3:13 a.m. Saturday, a preliminary investigation report said.

The Clark County coroner's office identified 32-year-old Jamil Kadar Hawkins and Jones as the victims. Both died from multiple injuries caused in the crash.

A 2006 silver Saturn Ion driven by Jones was going southbound in the right travel lane of U.S. 95, Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Kevin Honea said.

Hawkins was driving northbound in the same lane in a 2003 Dodge Stratus, Honea said. As Hawkins tried to avoid a crash by steering right, the front of the Ion struck the driver's side of the Stratus.

The Las Vegas Fire and Rescue squad responded to the crash, said Tim Szymanski, spokesman for the Las Vegas Fire department.

Firefighters extricated Hawkins from the wreckage and he apparently died on the way to a local hospital, Honea said.

Jones was trapped inside the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene, Honea said. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts.

The Nevada Highway Patrol's crash investigation is ongoing and is expected to take months before toxicological and other test results are known, Honea said.
