LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Democrats are ones looking out for us

Monday, Oct. 27, 2008 | 2:02 a.m.

Every four years a Republican presidential candidate tries to convince average Americans that he is interested in their future. Unfortunately for the Republicans, history doesn’t back up their claims.

Social Security and Medicare were passed by the Democrats with little Republican support. It was the Democrats who passed the GI bill, giving veterans a chance for education and housing. It was President Truman who integrated our military, and Lyndon Johnson who signed the Civil Rights Act, giving minorities a chance to participate in our democracy.

At every step, Democrats have worked to meet the needs of Americans: to provide health insurance for poor children (vetoed by President Bush), to aid our schools, and to help our children get college educations.

Yet it seems many of the people who enjoy these benefits quickly forget the party that gave them these aids and buy into the Republican claims. Let’s recognize the assistance that many of us enjoy, and vote accordingly.
