LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Don’t blame Obama for plumber fiasco

Sunday, Oct. 26, 2008 | 2:05 a.m.

Where is the logic by John McCain supporters in accusing the Barack Obama campaign of the trashing of a private citizen, Joe Wurzelbacher? It wasn’t the Obama campaign that recorded the conversation between Mr. Wurzelbacher and Obama and then uploaded the recording to cyberspace. And it most certainly wasn’t the Obama campaign that decided to introduce “Joe the Plumber” into the national conscious.

If blame has to be assigned, consider: Someone in the McCain campaign viewed the conversation and came to the conclusion that there was an advantage to McCain therein. And then it was McCain himself who sat on the stage and introduced Joe Wurzelbacher to a national audience.

As for the media: After all the attention paid to the vetting or not vetting of Gov. Sarah Palin as the Republican vice presidential nominee, just what did anyone expect to happen with the introduction of a private citizen into the campaign? After all, it is the media’s job to let the public know just who “Joe the Plumber” is.

And Mr. Wurzelbacher himself has to take some of the blame. It was he who chose to misrepresent himself in that conversation with Obama.

The McCain campaign seized upon an opportunity to portray Sen. Obama as a socialist. Whether they investigated Mr. Wurzelbacher’s claim or not, they chose to let the chips fall where they may. That, folks, is the logic of the “Joe the Plumber” situation.
