LETTER TO THE EDITOR:
Find a way to attract retirees to Las Vegas
Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008 | 2:04 a.m.
Local governments in Southern Nevada are busy queuing up for federal funds targeted at the tens of thousands of homes that are now, or soon to be, in foreclosure here. With ever more job layoffs on the horizon and workers’ wages either being frozen or cut, it will be difficult to find qualified homebuyers.
But there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and it’s not a train. Nationwide, Las Vegas area housing is the hardest hit with prices tumbling daily. This creates a positive financial differential for those owning homes in other states not as affected by the downturn.
Maybe our cities and the Clark County Commission should put on their thinking caps and find a way to provide incentives those wanting to retire soon to relocate here and purchase foreclosed homes.
Seniors don’t burden schools with children, are usually financially self sufficient, have medical coverage, don’t clog the highways during rush hour, rarely end up in jail and will their spend money in casinos and restaurants.
How about we pay for their moves here if they purchase a foreclosed property? Just a thought.
