Library to host Halloween party

Local children will soon get the chance to don their pajamas, including Halloween-themed pajamas, for a spooky evening at the library.

The Enterprise Library will host a Boo! Boo! Halloween Pajama Party 7-8 p.m. Oct. 27 in the storyroom. The library is at 25 E. Shelbourne Ave., off Las Vegas Boulevard near Windmill lane.

The event is intended for children ages 3 to 8.

Family festival to benefit charities

The Autumn Family Festival at McCarran Marketplace has face painting, pumpkin pie and more.

The free festival is Oct. 25, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Pumpkin painting starts at 1 p.m., with judging at 2 p.m.

Proceeds will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Nevada and Child Haven. Donations of new or gently used children's clothing are encouraged.

A costume contest for children will take place at 11 a.m. and will be judged at noon.

McCarran Marketplace is on the southwest corner of Eastern Avenue between Russell and Sunset roads.

Illinois woman wins chili cookoff

About 400 chili chefs from North America stirred up the competition at the International Chili Society's 42nd annual World's Championship Chili Cookoff.

Silverado's chili connoisseur couple, Bob and Jodi Wiseman, didn't crack the top 10 for the first time in three years.

"We don't know where we failed but we're competing against that huge number of entries," Bob Wiseman said. "But it's always a good run."

Georgia Weller from Illinois went home $25,000 richer as the new World's Champion Chili Cook.

Pedestrian dies after accident

The Nevada Highway Patrol reopened all lanes on the westbound 215 Beltway about 7:20 a.m. Oct. 22 after a fatal accident involving a pedestrian being hit by a cement truck, trooper Kevin Honea said.

The accident occurred about 3 a.m. when a man darted onto the highway in front of a cement truck that was traveling west toward the north I-15 on-ramp, officers said.

Cancer center to hold haircut event

Comprehensive Cancer Centers of Nevada and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department will host the second annual Klip It for Kidz to benefit the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 25 at the Metro Enterprise Area Command Center, 6975 W. Windmill Lane.

Event-goers may be sponsored to have their heads shaved or donate hair to Locks of Love. For more information, call 735-8434 or visit nvccf.org.

Charity quacks up $1 million prize

The Foundation for Positively Kids is hosting a Rubber Duck Derby with a chance to win $1 million.

The Foundation is a Las Vegas-based nonprofit organization providing services for Clark County's medically fragile and terminally ill children,

The 2008 Rubber Duck Derby runs noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 25 at Town Square, 6605 Las Vegas Blvd. South.

Ducks are $5 each or keep a duck family together for $25 per family of six ducks. Entrance is free.
