Beatty Elementary plans writing contest
The John Beatty Elementary School Parent Teacher Association will host a writing contest as a tribute to Beatty.
The theme of the contest is "Wow!" The top three entries in grades pre-school through second and the top three entries in grades third through fifth will receive gift cards to Borders Bookstore.
The work of all six winners will be submitted to the Nevada PTA for judging later in the year.
The entries may be fiction or non-fiction and can be essays, short stories, poetry or drama.

Giving Tree set up to collect supplies
A Giving Tree has been created at Gehring Elementary School to help teachers and students.
Teachers have written requests for supplies on the leaves of the tree, which is in the main office.
Parents and community members are asked to help by purchasing the requested supplies and bringing them to the school office for distribution.

Coronado to hold blood drive
Coronado High School will hold a blood drive between 7 a.m. and noon Oct. 28.
Students must be 17 or older to donate and must have a signed parent permission slip.
