Letter to the editor:
Money redistribution nothing new in U.S.
Thursday, Oct. 23, 2008 | 2:02 a.m.
The John McCain-Sarah Palin campaign is making a huge issue about Sen. Barack Obama’s comments regarding redistribution of wealth.
I admit that Obama’s off-the-cuff comments were poorly chosen. However, redistributing wealth is what the U.S. government does — and has done for the 60 years I’ve been on the planet.
Our federal income taxes are deposited into one giant coffer. From there, our senators and congressmen make the decision as to how this money is spent — and how the pork is distributed. The tax dollars that residents of densely populated, wealthier California pay into the system do not automatically return to California for state projects.
Instead, they may go to a state such as New Mexico, which is sparsely populated, much poorer and ranks high on the welfare rolls. In fact, in recent history, New Mexico has received more of your tax dollars per capita than any other state. This is the way the U.S. government works.
How do you think that Bridge to Nowhere was going to be built? Not by the tax dollars generated from the residents of sparsely populated Alaska, but with the tax dollars paid to the federal government by the residents of the Lower 48. Redistribution of wealth? Of course it is, and always has been.
All those Republicans who believe redistribution of wealth is something Obama invented — I invite you to go back to school, revisit Civics 101, and learn about how your government really works.

Obama gives the phrase "promote the general WELFARE" a whole new Alinsky-ish meaning".
Saul is smiling from hell today!
That is not how our government is supposed to work.
Republicans give it to party X, Democrats give it to party X too, but pretend it when to the poor.
The rich always get theirs, the poor get scraps. That is how wealth redistribution works in practice and it should be ended.
The writer fails the understand the difference between the classic help "up" programs such as health care credits, or jobs creation programs provide; and the welfare help "out" has as it only purpose to move money from the middleclass taxpayers to the "non" tax payers.
The corner stone of Obama's fiscal recovery plan is the tax cut for 95 percent of workers and their families with a tax cut of $500 for workers and $1000 for working couples. Since 44% of American worker do not pay federal income taxes they will receive an annual welfare check.
Obama says that what we need to do is recognize that your retirement contributions to the Social Security and Medicare Trust Funds (payroll Tax) should be given back.
This has the net effect of reducing your SS and Medicare contribution dollar for dollar up to $1000.
Since the retirement Trust Fund money and the general fund is combined, this has the direct result of reducing the retirement Trust Funds.
Spread over a year, welfare check will provide a 20 year old worker $1.37 per day, and a family of four where both parents work will get $2.75 per day. Homeless people will get their money thorough the local community organizer. This money will allow you to buy a happy meal everyday for the rest of your life.
The best part about this is that the top 5% of the rich people will have to pay for this. Each day a rich person will be buying a happy meal for 20 poor and middle class people.
These politicians spend more money to GET the job they're seeking than the job actually pays.....why is that? Could it be because it's worth it to them to be able to protect their wallets? I think so......... These people don't give a hoot in hell about the american people - if they did they wouldn't be spending millions of dollars to advertise their slurs against each other and hundreds of thousands of dollars on clothes, $400 haircuts etc. when they know that all this money could certainly be put to better use - like maybe helping out the very people who paid into their 'lush' fund thru their hard earned tax dollars. I am disgusted with every last one of these creeps.

THIS is the Obama working welfare economic plan
Money has been being redistributed in the past 8 years. It has gone from the middle class to the wealthy at a rate unprecedented in the history of the United States! They want it all, and McCain stands ready to give it to them!
The Democrats send calling money off shore?? Couldn't they even find American's to do their dirty work? They have their calls coming from Romania to save a buck?http://www.billingsgazette.net/articles/2008/10/23/news/local/18-romania.txt
Notacon, I remain mystified by the failure of half or so of the American people to understand the simple reality you state. Can you help explain why people are so suckered in by the seeming goal of the Republicans to create a permanent American aristocracy living off of our labor?
