Letter to the editor:

The best way to spread wealth

Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2008 | 2:03 a.m.

Nothing about “Joe the Plumber” rates a quarter-page column by Clarence Page (“Joe the Plumber isn’t exactly the boost McCain needed,” Monday).

But these words spoken by Barack Obama to Joe Wurzelbacher and omitted from Page’s column rate such a discourse: “I think that, when you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody.”

I am certainly concerned about who spreads the wealth; what criteria determine to whom the wealth goes; how one qualifies for a piece of that wealth; and how many jobs are created by the spreading of the wealth.

When wealth is used by a business owner — let’s call him Joe — to pay wages to Steve, that is good. Steve then spreads earned wealth to others for his family’s necessities such as food, energy, education, child care, legal advice, medical care, etc. These recipients of Steve’s wealth spread that wealth further for their needs.

Wealth spread by working people creates new jobs and improves the economy.
