Letter to the editor:

All signs pointing to an Obama win

Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2008 | 2:01 a.m.

This past weekend Barack Obama turned the presidential steeplechase from a close race into a victory lap. Here’s how:

• The latest national polls, including one by CNN/Opinion Research Corp., show Obama with a substantial lead among likely voters, about 51 percent to 46 percent.

•Some polls also show a lead of about 100 electoral votes for Obama over Sen. John McCain.

• The Chicago Tribune, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times and Las Vegas Sun have endorsed Obama.

• Approximately 25 newspapers nationwide that endorsed George Bush for the presidency in 2004 have endorsed Obama.

• Former Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman and Secretary of State Colin Powell, a Republican, endorsed Obama for president.

• For September, Obama received contributions of $150 million from the public whereas McCain was granted $80 million of taxpayer money from the federal government.

• Obama continues to attract many thousands of supporters to his meetings throughout the so-called battleground states, substantially more than McCain.

• Gov. Sarah Palin’s appeal as a possible vice president has deteriorated as her limited knowledge of foreign affairs (other than being able to see Russia from Alaska) and the economy became evident in her speeches and interviews.

• In the meantime Sen. Joe Biden continues to impress voters with his vast knowledge and experience in foreign and domestic affairs accumulated as a senator.

• It is true that there have been instances of a switch in the final days from one candidate to another. Example: Jimmy Carter was leading Ronald Reagan in the polls but ended up losing the election. Yes, but John McCain is no Ronald Reagan. To paraphrase Mr. Reagan: Are you better off today than you were eight years ago? Four years ago? One month ago?

All the above is why Obama will win big Nov. 4.

In the homespun language of Sarah Palin: You betcha!
