LETTER TO THE EDITOR:
If he wants a nuclear dump, he can have it
Monday, Oct. 20, 2008 | 2:02 a.m.
Now that George Bush is nearly out of his office job, I would like to put his talent to good use in order to solve one of Nevada’s most serious problems. I would to put him in charge of a group to establish a nuclear waste facility near Crawford, Texas.

Why is it a nuclear dump. A sealed place to hold the nuclear material in one place protected by the geology of the area. Three thousand jobs building it and 500 permanent jobs of good pay and benefits to operate it seem to be something Nevada could use.
To Neiman 1: If the leak proof canisters and the geology barriers fail and the nuclear waste leaks into the water table you won't have to worry at all...it will be over for all of us in the southwest. Do you know of anything manmade that has lasted 10,000 years? The half-life of plutonium is that long which means in 10,000 from now, half of what was originally put there will still be there and just as dangerous.in 20,000 years 1/4 of it will still be there...etc.,etc for 30,000, 40,000 years....
If GW Bush wants it, and McCain supports it...let them put it in their states... That way they can enjoy the real benefits of "nuclar" wastes
If heat builds in the cannisters and tunnels over time that may result in a Chernoble like explosion and then we will all have a George W. Bush "nuclar" glow about us.
I suggest you take some college courses in physical science, especially chemstry and physics and find about the real dangers of nuclear wastes.
Vesestini is right.
Obama is promising to shut down Yucca.
In four years from now, if Obama fails in his promise to shut down Yucca then Nevadans should vote out Obama.
Those jobs won't go to the average alchoholic unemployed gambler from Nevada. They would bring people in. Yucca is dead because the science is flawed and there have been deliberate dodges by the DOE on the safety issues. Even if it lingers on paper, Nevada will delay it in ten year intervals. None of us will see it in our lifetime. Good deal.
Not being up on 'nuclear waste' let me just ask this - where is it being stored now, while the debate about Yucca Mtn. continues?
No excuses.
Hussein promise to kill it.
We will demand payment on that promise within 4 years.
I like the idea of storing it in Texas. Then send the overflow to Alaska.
interesting chain of comments but think of this... billions have been spent on Yucca Mountain already... far more would have to be spent to find or develop a different site... it is not a good idea so keep it where it is now as it is too expensive and not as secure or safe as a centralized site would be... no one is saying that Yucca Mountain will hold everything for 10,000 years... how about 50 or 100 so that a safe and secure place can hold the stuff until a better plan can be put in effect? The status quo is a no-go... dumping is not the goal here... managing the waste is...
to the chernoble-melt-down-hysteria, put down your comic books and grab on to the best solution "for now" thinking and be constructive and creative ... we have enough hysterical looneys lately....
The problem why they are not considering another site because the "Screw Nevada" bill says only Nevada can be the place to store the watse.
Oppps...that bill was passed by when House and Senate was under control of the Democrats.
Now, the Democrats control both the House and the Senate. Just last month, the Democratic controlled sub-committee voted to fully fund Yucca.
I guess the Democrats do not care about Nevada.
Obama has promised to kill Yucca. With his strong leaderhship, I am sure he will have no problem killing Yucca.
If he does not do it then in four years Nevadans should not vote him out.
Does anyone really think Obama gives a hoot about Nevada and Yucca Mountain other than to say whatever it takes to get the NV vote? He has already changed his stance on nuclear energy, there is no reason to think he won't change on Yucca, too.
Bottom line, nuclear energy is a key component of any plan to get rid of dependence on fossil fuels, especially in 10yrs or less. That means Yucca will go thru as intended.
Besides, if Democrats and Republicans both can mortage the future of our children and grand-children only 50 years from now, it shouldn't matter much at all who will be around after 10,000 years. What is the half-life of a political party?
How about northern nevada, up near gibbons tax free ranch?
I agree nance we have to make cheesbama accountable, if yucca stays, he goes.
