One dead, one critical in homemade plane crash

Sunday, Oct. 19, 2008 | 10:52 a.m.

A Las Vegas man died and the woman with him was critically injured when a homemade, single-engine low-wing airplane crashed in southwestern Utah on Saturday.

The names of the two Las Vegas residents were not released. It is not known if the middle-aged couple are related or married, the Iron County Sheriff's Office said.

The woman suffered numerous broken bones after the plane disintegrated in a desert area near Parowan Airport, south of Cedar City, the sheriff's office said.

The aircraft did not burn. Investigators speculated that the crash was caused by mechanical failure.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the crash.
