LETTER TO THE EDITOR:
What’s the difference between Bush, Palin?
Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008 | 2:03 a.m.
Since Sarah Palin was chosen as her party’s vice presidential candidate, I have felt unsettled by the selection but really could not put my finger on exactly why.
During a morning run, it suddenly occurred to me, and I stopped dead in my tracks in that sobering moment of clarity. She has ignited the same base that elected George Bush and has a great deal in common with the president:
Both governors of oil-rich states. Both extremely personable and the kind of next door neighbors you would appreciate. Both street-wise politicians who know what it takes to win an election. Both average achievers in academics and uncomfortable with science when the evidence conflicts with faith. Both creationists and religious fundamentalists. Both with no experience on the complex international political and cultural stages. Both heavily managed by handlers and protected from the prying public eye.
My uneasiness with her stems from my concern that this congenial and personable young woman would make the very same mistakes the president has made. She is, simply put, George Bush with lipstick.
