LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Important questions for McCain to answer

Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008 | 2:04 a.m.

I have a few questions for John McCain that I think need to be answered fully before the election in November — clear, concise answers free from political rhetoric and fluff.

It is obvious McCain desires to continue the war in Iraq and Afghanistan at the cost of $10 billion dollars a month from our treasury. Question: Why is it we can afford to spend this money there but cannot afford to spend it on our own needs such as rebuilding our own infrastructure — roads, bridges, dams, schools and hospitals?

Iraq is an oil-rich country with a $70 billion surplus, but so far it has failed to contribute financially to its own military security, infrastructure and war effort. Question: When, how and to what extent will McCain make them financially responsible for, and contribute to, their own debt that they seem so unwilling to assume on their own behalf?

McCain balks at the idea of universal health care for our own citizens while promising a $5,000 bonus to aid in the purchase of private health insurance. Question: Why can we afford to spend $10 billion monthly on this Iraq-Afghanistan war but can ill afford one nickel for universal health care for all of our own citizens including children, the elderly and the homeless? Outline the specific steps to take to prevent hospitals, insurance and pharmaceutical companies from raising their prices to match this bonus.
