Riding in on a Harley with his signature sunglasses and bleach-blond spiked hair, chef Guy Fieri returned to his alma mater in style earlier this week for UNLV’s annual Chef Artist Dinner Series.

Fieri graduated from UNLV’s hospitality management program, and has since opened several restaurants in California. After that, appearances on "The Next Food Network Star" in 2006 opened the door for television shows, including "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives" and "Guy’s Big Bite."

"This school is in the heart of the food and entertainment epicenter. I mean, it's Vegas," Fieri said. "It doesn't get any better, and when you have a college here that is so connected to what’s going on with the whole hospitality factor, it’s amazing. So, for my chance to come back and participate, to add another dimension to what’s going on, I’m thrilled."

Planning for the Chef Artist Dinner Series began in September and faculty decided on Fieri as this year’s guest chef. The $100-per-person event included an hors d’oeuvres and cocktail hour followed by the main course, with all items selected by Fieri. Proceeds go toward student scholarships.

After weeks of planning, senior Anne Marino said she was happy to see the event occur with no major glitches.

"The best part is the day of the event," she said. "It’s so exciting because everything comes together and you get to serve the people. It's just so exciting."

Junior Jeff Holloway was one of several students who volunteered time to serve dishes at the event. He and his classmates listened to Fieri critique the food when the chef popped in for a taste test.

“We learned a lot, especially when he came in today," Holloway said. "He gave us a lot of tips."

UNLV student Alexandra Peacock wasn't shy to admit she was excited to get a picture with Fieri. Not only is she a fan of his shows, but she's also a self-described "foodie."

“He seems like a really genuine guy,” Peacock said. “And he was alumni here, so just to come back and show his appreciation for where he came from, we’re definitely really excited to meet him.”
