Letter to the editor:

McCain campaign has crossed a line

Friday, Oct. 17, 2008 | 2:02 a.m.

John McCain and Barack Obama are both honorable men. Each is qualified to be president. But dignity and respect are no longer principles of a desperate McCain-Palin ticket.

We’ve all heard the latest statements from McCain, Sarah Palin and “Fixed News” to the effect that Obama associates with “known terrorists.” These comments are obviously bogus, but they appeal to an ignorant and dangerous segment of our society.

At recent McCain-Palin rallies, attendees made comments such as “Obama is a terrorist,” “Obama supports terrorism,” “Obama is a Muslim,” and “Obama is an Arab.” A sign read “Obama bin Lyin.” Someone shouted “Kill him!” in reference to Obama. One man asked McCain if he and his family should be frightened that Obama might become president. To his credit, McCain answered “no,” but the damage has been done.

We are, according to President Bush’s repeated proclamations, involved in a war without end against terrorists. Knowing this, McCain and Palin have repeatedly claimed that Obama associates with and supports terrorists (based on the fact that Obama once served on a board with William Ayers who, 40 years ago, was involved in an organization that was willing to resort to bombing).

Using the word “terrorist” in connection with Obama is the equivalent of calling Obama a traitor. Worse, these comments obviously tend to incite certain people to violence.

Who knows what such lunatics will do as a result of the fear generated by these irresponsible statements? As Keith Olbermann recently stated: The McCain-Palin terrorist remarks are a clear and present danger to the peace of this nation.

This goes beyond winning or losing an election. What could be more irresponsible?
