Letter to the editor:

People overestimate a president’s power

Thursday, Oct. 16, 2008 | 2:03 a.m.

The amount of misinformation, exaggeration and outright lies in the presidential campaigns is staggering. Take the claims that a President Obama would raise your taxes, or take away your weapons.

People who believe this nonsense don’t know how our government works. You see, we have the legislative branch, made up of the Senate and the House of Representatives. They pass the laws, approve expenditures, cut or raise taxes, and could limit the ownership of weapons.

Then you have the executive branch, the president, who carries out the wishes of Congress, enforces the law and wages war when it is approved by Congress. The president is limited in what he can do, and has no magic wand that would allow him to act on his own.

The final branch is the judicial branch, the Supreme Court, which hears cases that involve the constitutionality of laws, and can rule against the president if he exceeds his authority.

It’s been working well for more than 200 years, and Barack Obama or any other president is bound to honor the law and obey Supreme Court rulings.
