Walden University offers teacher grants
Walden University will award $5,000 grants to three schools that host Educator for a Day events as part of the nationwide celebration of American Education Week, Nov. 16-22.
Any teacher or administrator from a public or private school with preschool to 12th grade may submit a nomination. The deadline for nominations is Oct. 20.

Collections aim to Make a Difference
Elise Wolff and Judith Steele elementary schools with Eldorado High School will participate in Make A Difference Day, Oct. 25, by collecting blankets and clothing for needy newborns.
Angels in the Valley, a nonprofit group, will collect the items on Oct. 25 for distribution to local hospitals.

Public input sought on new textbooks
Textbooks proposed for use in Clark County School District will be available for public review Oct. 23-24, as part of Nevada’s official textbook selection process.
The textbooks will be on public display 8 a.m.-5 p.m. in the curriculum library at the School District Curriculum and Professional Development Center, 3950 Pecos-McLeod.
The public review process allows written comments about textbooks that are being recommended for use.
Textbooks recommended for adoption are reviewed and approved by the School District Textbook Commission, with final approval by the State Board of Education.

Vanderburg names students of month
John Vanderburg Elementary School has named September Students of the Month for tracks 3, 4 and 5.
The students are first graders Jane Tingey, Riley Schwartz, Dane Frauenheim, Kaitlyn Henner, Gabriella Johnson and Ryan Kelleher.
Second graders McKenzie Gordon, Hana Sasaki, Lexi Gaxiola, Jessica Li, Yacento Thorpe and Sophia Nicholson.
Third graders Valerie Croswhite, Tommy Grambo, Tyler Jarley, Sydney McDermott, Robby Vandersteen and Danika Mertel.
Fourth graders Jettie Phillips, Max Goldberg, Emily Baity, John Capone, John Donohue and Tiffany McNamara.
Fifth graders Jacob Tyler, Amanda Lok, Aakansha Singh, Brennan Rosales, Baylea Clayton, Andrew Darakjian and Caroline Teixeira.
A special luncheon for the students will be held the last Thursday of the month. This month’s character trait was citizenship. October’s will be responsibility.
Parent advisory meeting scheduled
The Parent Advisory Committee District A Southeast Region meets at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 16 at Greenspun Junior High, 140 N. Valle Verde Drive.
The meeting will include a legislative candidate forum with candidates from Senate District 5 and Assembly Districts 20, 21, 22, 23 and 29. Each candidate will give a short opening statement and then answer for questions from the audience.

Local student admitted to university
Cody Aughney of Henderson has been admitted to the class of 2012 at Bryant University. Aughney plans to major in business administration.
Bryant University is located in Smithfield, R.I., and is home to more than 3,650 undergraduate and graduate students.
