Letter to the editor:

Republicans have become what they loathe

Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2008 | 2:04 a.m.

God has a sense of humor. I have been a Republican all my life. My liberal friends think I am to the right of Attila the Hun.

The irony of all this is that the GOP for more than a century has accused the Democrats of being socialists. My favorite saying has been: America is great because of capitalism, not socialism.

We have witnessed how socialism has failed all over the world and especially with the former Soviet Union.

Now, after almost 150 years from the capitulation of the Whig Party and the birth of the GOP and capitalism, we are on the brink of disaster with our former philosophies.

The GOP has bailed out our banks and insurance companies with $700 billion of taxpayers’ money. The government now has control over much of big business in America.

Members of the GOP are the socialists, and that is bizarre. What also is bizarre is that we may soon hand over the country to the most liberal member of the Senate, Barack Obama. He will not have to fight for his liberal cause because the GOP will usher in what he has been fighting for all his political life.
