Reid to speak at luncheon

Sen. Harry Reid will be the guest speaker at a luncheon held by the Asian Chamber of Commerce Oct. 23.

The luncheon will run 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the ballroom at the South Point Hotel Casino, 9777 Las Vegas Blvd. South.

Admission includes lunch and is $30 for members and $40 for non-members.

St. Rose Dominican receives award

St. Rose Dominican Hospital's Palliative Care program has received the 2009 National Consensus Project Quality in Palliative Care Award. St. Rose was one of nine hospitals to receive the award this year.

Palliative care refers to a multi-disciplinary approach improving the quality of life for patients with chronic conditions and life-threatening illnesses and their families. The programs guide patients and families through the decision-making processes and includeend-of-life care.

The National Consensus Project Quality Care Award is presented annually to top organizations that have implemented palliative care principles supported by the project.

Summit to address issue of wild horses

The International Society for the Protection of Wild Horses and Burros and Horses 4 Ever will host a conference to address issues regarding Nevada's wild horses.

The conference will include experts in equine, range science and range management, representatives of the Bureau of Land Management and wild horse advocate organizations.

The goal of the conference is to seek viable solutions to the wild horse crisis.

The conference will take place from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 11 and 12 at the South Point Hotel and Casino, 9777 Las Vegas Blvd. South. The cost is $25 and covers both days.

Cancer center to hold haircut event

Comprehensive Cancer Centers of Nevada and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department will host the second annual Klip It for Kidz to benefit the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 25 at the Metro Enterprise Area Command Center, 6975 W. Windmill Road, Las Vegas.

Event-goers may be sponsored by friends, family, co-workers and companies to have their heads shaved or donate hair to Locks of Love.

The event will also include exhibitions by the Metro K-9 unit, S.W.A.T. Team and Bomb Squad. Admission is free.

Church to host community party

Water of Life Lutheran Church invites neighbors to meet each other at its community block party from 1-5 p.m. on Oct. 12. The church is at 5430 S. Grand Canyon Dr., north of Russell Road.

Children can play in a bounce house, make crafts and have their face painted while eating cotton candy, hot dogs and popcorn. The event is free and includes music and balloon artists.

Dealership to host Thank A Vet

Red Rock Harley-Davidson, at 7100 W. Sahara Ave. near the intersection of Sahara Avenue and Rainbow Boulevard, is commemorating Veteran's Day on Nov. 11 with a "Thank A Vet" program.

Visitors to the dealership will be able to inscribe a thank you message for military veterans on a Harley-Davidson flag, which will be delivered to a local veteran's organization in the Las Vegas Valley after Nov. 11.

Thank you messages and photographs of veterans and active duty military personnel can also be sent via e-mail. The messages and images will be posted on the dealership's "Thank A Vet" web page and also forwarded to local veteran's groups.

Las Vegas Harley-Davidson, at 2605 S. Eastern Ave., will also participate in the event.

Event to raise funds for health care

The Southern Nevada Medical Industry Coalition will host a fundraiser 5:30-8:30 p.m. Oct. 16 to raise funds for its efforts in improving the quality of health care in the region.

The cocktail reception will take place at the home of David Dahan, managing partner for Orgill/Singer & Associates and president of the Henderson Chamber of Commerce board of directors. Dahan's residence is at 9101 Alta Drive, in One Queensridge Place.

The fundraiser is open to the public and admission is $100 per person. Walk-ins are accepted, but an RSVP is preferred. To RSVP for the event, send an e-mail to info@snmic.com.

Heaven Can Wait walk to raise funds

Heaven Can Wait Sanctuary is inviting pet lovers and owners to walk a mile in an effort to save the lives of pets that otherwise would be put down in local shelters each year.

This year's Lose-a-Pound With Your Hound will start at 9 a.m. on Oct. 19 at Bunker Family Park, near Tenaya Way and Alexander Road.

Funds raised from the event will provide help for homeless cats and dogs in the community, as well as support for the numerous programs Heaven Can Wait offers. The walk will offer food, games, prizes, obedience training and more.

ArtWalk to be held at Trails Village

The 10th Annual Fall ArtWalk, the Las Vegas Valley's longest-running juried art festival, runs10 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 25-26 at The Trails Village Center, 1970 Village Center Circle in Summerlin.

More than 70 new and returning artists will participate.

Live music, a kid's art park and Native American craft demonstrations will also be enjoyed at the free event.

Easter Seals to host Trunk or Treat

Easter Seals Southern Nevada is hosting its third annual Trunk or Treat 5-8 p.m. Oct. 25. The event will take place at 6200 W. Oakey Blvd., near the intersection of Charleston and Jones boulevards.

Admission is $15 per family and includes trick-or-treating, face painting, games and a haunted house. The event is open to the public and children will be trick-or-treating from car trunk to car trunk.

Easter Seals provides programs and services for children and adults with physical and developmental disabilities.
