UPS donates supplies to two schools

Students at Edna F. Hinman and Robert Taylor elementary schools will receive an assortment of school supplies as the result of a school supply drive from United Parcel Services.

Businesses and organizations that would like to become involved with local schools can contact Clark County School District's Partnership office at 799-6560.

Coronado students receive honor

Twelve students at Coronado High School have received the honor of Student of the Month for the month of September.

They are senior Melissa Brooks, senior Colby Hill, senior Alexander Godfrey, junior Shelsia Terry, junior Ilyssa Popowcer, junior Matthew Tan, junior Husna Sulahria, junior Lai Ue Li, sophomore Catherine Canizalez, sophomore Kendall Lynch, freshman Melina Proctor and freshman Delia Addo-Yobo.

Local instructor is Teacher of the Year

Bob Miller Middle School algebra and math teacher Kenneth Stedman has been named Sam's Club Teacher of the Year.

Sam's Club donated $1,000 to Miller Middle School and presented Stedman with a Teacher of the Year Plaque and a $100 gift card to use for classroom supplies.

UNR creates high school press group

The University of Nevada Reno Reynolds School of Journalism has organized the first statewide association to promote excellence in journalism in Nevada high schools.

The Reynolds High School Institute will help high school teachers and advisors hone teaching skills, recognize and incorporate media trends into teaching plans and high school newspapers, and encourage students to consider journalism as a career.

The school also hosts Journalism Day, an annual event for high school newspaper editors and reporters, on Nov. 7.

Nevada foundation awarded $80,000

Wells Fargo has awarded the Nevada Public Education Foundation $80,000 in grants.

Of that, $70,00 will be used for the Wells Fargo Grant a Wish for Your School program for classroom projects in financial literacy, math and technology.

The remaining $10,000 will be used for the Nevada Public Education Foundation's Rural Career Development Program, which is designed to encourage students to include postsecondary education options and career or technical training in their future plans.

Alexander Dawson hosts Fall Festival

The Alexander Dawson School, 10845 West Desert Inn Road, will hold its second annual Fall Festival from 12-4 p.m. Oct. 11.

The festival will feature costume contests, a pumpkin patch and more. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 14 and under.

Locals receive Laub Scholarship

Southwest Gas Corp. and the Laub Foundation have awarded two local high school students with $1,500 scholarships.

The recipients — Annie Marie Bouck, a 2008 graduate of Palo Verde High School, and Stephanie Guanlao, a 2008 graduate of Spring Valley High School — are children of Southwest Gas employees.

The Laub scholarships are awarded to children of Southwest Gas employees who excel academically and personally. The scholarships are renewable for four years and are applied to undergraduate studies or vocational school studies.
