Boulder City’s fall sports seasons ending on high notes

Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008 | midnight

Boulder City High's fall sports teams will have a strong presence in the postseason later this fall.

Don't be surprised if one or more teams walk away as state champions. I sure won't be.

The regular season for most high school fall sports is rapidly winding down and there are several teams and individuals getting ready to add their names to the school's elite teams of the past.

The 3A Southern League girls golf tournament is Oct. 16 at Boulder City Golf Course.

Other sports — cross country, boys and girls soccer — wrap up their seasons at the end of the month and begin their postseason in early November. For the Eagles athletes who compete in these sports, things are looking pretty good.

The girls golf team has been nearly untouchable this year and is looking like a strong favorite to capture the league championship — especially since it will be played on their home course.

Both the boys and girls soccer teams have been impressive this season and while the boys already lost a tough game at Faith Lutheran, they're still in a position to make a run at the league's No. 2 seed for the tournament.

Since the soccer state tournament is being held in Southern Nevada in Mesquite, the league's top two teams earn a berth in the tournament.

As long as the boys reach the league title game, they'll have a chance to play for the state title.

It's a similar story with the girls team. They, however, haven't yet faced Faith Lutheran in league play. That game is Oct. 14 at Faith Lutheran's home field.

The girls are still playing for a shot at being the No. 1 team in the league.

Junior Matt Lundgren is showing himself to be one of the top runners in Southern Nevada. He's clearly the favorite to win the individual league title and with the state meet taking place at Veteran's Memorial Park, his chances at a state title get even better.

The other runners are starting to come together and could put the Eagles in a strong position to either capture the league title or come in a close second.
