Letter to the editor:

Don’t be hoodwinked by folksy routine

Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008 | 2:03 a.m.

Gov. Sarah Palin’s attempt to appeal to the average American, the “hockey moms” and “Joe Six-Packs,” as she calls them, is wearing very thin.

While Americans are concerned about issues such as the Iraq war and the current economic crisis, Palin’s “folksiness” just does not connect with those Americans who want their leaders to be able to think through our problems and implement solutions to those problems.

Her desire to connect in a way George W. Bush did (remember, he was the “folksy” guy you’d want to have a beer with), reminds me what happens to our country when that is the barometer for what we want in a leader.

I don’t want to sit down and have a beer with the president or vice president; I want our leaders to be smart enough to find solutions to the country’s problems.

Being winked at by Palin and her attempt to connect with me because she is a “hockey mom” do not convince me of her competence to address the difficult issues our country faces.

Some consider Palin’s debate performance a success because she did not make a major gaffe while merely reciting talking points. However, it is evidence only that she is well out of her league to serve as vice president of the United States.

Do we really want to set the bar that low? The idea of Sarah Palin as vice president is frightening.
