For the second time in two days, federal and local law enforcement officials have captured an out-of-state sex offender in Las Vegas.
U.S. Marshals led Nevada Fugitive Investigative Strike Team members in making the arrest of 28-year-old Derick Freeland of Grand Rapids, Mich., in Las Vegas today.
The Grand Rapids, Mich. Police Department charged Freeland with sexual assault on a minor under 13 years of age.
Marshals in Michigan developed information that Freeland had fled to Las Vegas, the Las Vegas Marshals office said.
Mashals and task force officers tracked Freeland to a condo in the 1000 block of Willow Tree Drive near Washington Avenue and U.S. Highway 95 where he was staying with a friend.
Within four hours of receiving the lead, Freeland was arrested without incident inside the home and has been taken to the Clark County Detention Center where he awaits extradition.
Late Monday marshals and task force members arrested a Virginia man, 46-year-old Kent Arthur Powell, wanted for sexual assault of a child. It is alleged that the victim was an 8-year-old girl, the U.S. Marshals office said.
The Nevada FIST team arrested Powell at a house near Civic Center Drive and Cheyenne Avenue where he was staying with a friend. Within 10 hours of receiving this lead, marshals and officers arrested Powell without incident.
